I guess the modern World would not understand the sort of humour he performed...one of the old crowd of great British comedians probably best exemplified by the "plank"

Partnered with Hattie Jacques was one of those classic parings.

Sad he suffered so long with his hearing loss

A sad loss for British comedy. Not very long ago I read his autobiography 'If I Don't Write It Nobody Else Will' for which he wrote the manuscript in longhand.I still have 'The Plank' on DVD.EricT

All comedians had off days when they weren't quite as funny (Tommy Cooper, Tony Hancock), but not Eric - he was consistently good. His humour was subtle and underplayed but his timing and expressions were faultless. He's probably given me more pleasure over my lifetime than any of the others.

He even did serious acting in his later years! He was excellent in the movie 'The Others'. Such a gentleman.

Sitting with my dad as a kid and watching The Plank is one of my earliest childhood memories. I loved that film and still have it on video somewhere, not that I've got a video player any longer.

RIP Eric, you were brilliant and your humour crossed generations.

The Plank is now in my possession now all I need to do is educate the locals on British comedy.
