Many thanks for posting this.I wouldn't say that the typhoon was underrated at the the time but subsequent history probably hasn't done it,or its pilots, justice. The Spitfire,Hurricane,Mustang etc caught the attention of the media and deservedly so,but the Typhoon certainly hasn't received due recognition.I recommend reading 'The Big Show' by the French pilot Pierre Closterman which gives a real insight into ground attack roles with Typhoons.
Some years ago while on a tour of the battlefields of Normandy with a friend of mine,we were at a cafe/restaurant on a hillside overlooking a valley which was in the Falaise gap.In the same cafe was a party of Polish tourists. The poles also fought in that region.Their tourguide said to us that after the battle of the Falaise, the whole area which could be seen from our vantage point was totally black and he asked if anyone new the reason why.A few guessed at things such as smoke or fire damage but we were told that no,the reason was flies, billions of them crawling over the devasted remains of the retreating German army and its horses caused by allied artillery, but most of all by Typhoons called down by ground controllers.A formidable weapon indeed, flown by brave men.Sorry about rambling on but I just wanted to make a point.EricT
