A pastor's wife was expecting a baby, so he stood before the
congregation and asked for a raise. After much discussion,
they passed a rule that whenever the pastor's family expanded,so would his paycheque.

After 6 children, this started to get expensive and the congregation decided to hold another meeting to discuss the pastor's expanding
salary.

A great deal of yelling and inner bickering ensued, as to how much the pastor's additional children were costing the church,
and how much more it could potentially cost.

After listening to them for about an hour, the pastor rose from hischair and spoke,
"Children are a gift from God, and we will take as many gifts as He gives us."

Silence fell over the congregation. In the back pew, a little old ladystruggled to stand, and finally said in her frail voice,

"Rain is also a gift from God, but when we get too much of it, we wear rubbers."

The entire congregation said, "Amen."

Well.. we don't wear rubbers exactly when it rains do we or I have misunderstood something along the way

I do remember when we were coming to the US, my father told me that the things on the ends of pencils were called erasures and not rubbers in the US. At the time I had no idea why that was significant.

The left-pondians sometimes refer to the slip-on type of galoshes as 'rubbers' as in a rubber over-shoe.

Locally, rubbers used to be used to describe oilskins

Indeed. As a kid, a rubber was the bit on the end of a pencil or a rubber in it's own right (eg, minus pencil). The word eraser was awfully posh and not in common use

One thing is for certain, that joke didn't begin life on this side of the pond
