I didn't expect the ground to be so close as he went into the fog!

There's a good case for having 747's clearing fog on the ground too

I've landed a few time in a Freindship where the wheels have been down when we were still well above the cloud

...similar coditions to this dense, but not very deep.
The 747 could certainly have a new Korea in fog clearance

Scary stuff
I'm going, definitely going - tried to pan around the cockpit with my joystick top-hat.
Cheers

Not really piloting as such as it was an autoland... good driving, may be, as taxying to stand afterwards is harder!!!! I did the low vis course on the A330 sim last year and it was great fun! Just not done it for real yet... After you have rolled out on landing and you come to turn off the runway you have to disconnect the autopilot; if you don't, the ac will try and get back on the centre line of the runway, steering its self! All very clever stuff.
As for the low fog... on the VC10 the decision height for an ILS was usually 200 ft above ground level. I once overshot at 200 ft as I couldn't see the runway but had only just entered the cloud!

My most memorable jump seat landing was in Dubai on a 777. I can't remember the visibility details but it was less than in the video. The F/O calling 'decide', the first runway light appearing, the captain saying 'land' and the wheels touching down all happened within a couple of seconds but finding the turn off was much more traumatic.
We were moving very slowly between the runway and the taxiway when an Emirates Airbus appeared out of nowhere on our port bow on a collision course and the skipper jammed the brakes on very hard. After that they gave up and called for a follow-me van to get us to the terminal but it wasn't easy to follow that either. Unless we were very close to it it disappeared into the fog and if we were too close one of the pilots had to stand up to look down over the nose to see it.
It took a long time to get to the terminal and involved a lot of muttering and white knuckles. I sat quietly and offered no advice

You can see how the Tenerife accident happened...A mistake is made and no one can see it with sight alone

... but remember Garry that that accident was caused because of poor comms, lack of understanding and impatience. The major aggravating cause was the vis, but had there been todays procedures it would not have happened.

...yep...I realise that Tonks
What I mean is when some one ended up where they shouldn't have been for whatever reason, no one knew that because he couldn't be seen, meaning this vid shows how restricting the vis is.
Not implyimg the viz caused the Tenerfiffe...as it didn't... which is what I meant by a mistake being made and not spotted...it just prevented the mistake being seen.

Abu Dhabi has some interesting fog effects.....at ground level visibility is about 10m, but if you are in the tower you can see the tails sticking out of the murk
Sadly I wasn't that interested in photography during that time so I don't have any pics.
