Shakin' all over!

Well, we just had an earthquake here in Virginia! It lasted about 30 seconds, started slowly and intensified. The house shook quite a bit. They are saying this was 5.9 on the Richter scale and was centered near Richmond about 90 miles away from me, but it was felt as far away as New York and Atlanta. We had a very mild one last year but this one was far more noticable. Earthquakes are rare on the East Coast of the US however it was enough to convince me I probably don't ever want to live in California.

Thanks for the comments! So far i have not felt any aftershocks, although the news says there has been at least one.
Gary - I thought Nigels were a dime a dozen so we can probably afford that! Loved the Quaker comment, but not a lot of those in Virginia. Ok - maybe one big over weight Quaker was feeling his oats!
Eric - "Be honest now Nigel, when was the last time the Earth moved for you?" Well, I thought Congress had finally agreed on something but then I remembered their away on holiday!
Joe - Always liked Carol King, she wrote some great songs! I don't know if the Earth moved under my feet, but the walls were moving under my hands!
Perhaps we have found the cause:
My daughter and my grandson were out for a walk. She was talking on her mobile to a lady at the local Episcopal Church about my grandson's baptism. She had just told the lady that she was not really a regular church goer and had not been since Palm Sunday. On the other end, there was a loud scream and the lady said "I have to go" and promptly hung up. A little perplexed to say the least, she then noticed people running out of buildings on Wisconsin Avenue. She had not felt a thing but that was the exact moment that the earthquake hit as she later found out!

When I was living in Belize a good few years ago a major earthquake hit Honduras, the shocks hit Belize at 0630.
The house turned to rubber, the floor, ceiling and walls all went in different directions...the best bit was the sensation of floating as the bed dropped from underneath me.
A few minutes later the alarm clock went off, I was already up and outside

<-----Now living twelve miles from the San Andreas Fault and Astride the Rodgers Creek/Hayward faults......wake me when it when it says 6.8 ......Seriously funny, we get half a dozen tremors a week, some you notice most you dont, Oh yes and for all you swimmers -- we live exactly twenty miles from Point Reyes which is the center of the Farralon Gulf, where Bruce and Mrs Bruce like to make little great white sharks and dine on Seals.
