FSX Display Problem

I'm hoping one of the Gurus on here can help me with this!

I recently bought "Hawker Heroes" by FCS. Nicely modelled aircraft but with one problem. On 3 out of the 4 aircraft there is a strange white patch or "light" in the Prop Disc. This "light" moves around the disc as you pan round the aircraft. At first I thought it might be a texture problem but even after removing the textures it is still there on a completly textureless aircraft. These 2 shots illustrate the problem.

FCS Support have been very helpful but have so far been unable to identify the cause. They have suggested that rather than the models themselves it may be a "bufferpool" problem with my FSX installation. I've done a complete FSX reinstall but with no success.

As an experiment I checked out the default aircraft. All were OK with the exception of the Aircreation 582SL ( not an aircraft I have ever used) and the same problem is there, which seems to confirm that it may be my system rather than a specific model problem. I have not, however, seen it on any other aircraft!

I have no doubt that the answer, if there is one, is either very simple or very technical but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete,

As far as I'm aware that's 'disc bloom' and is set in the material of the model when compiled.

If you have one texture that doesn't have the "problem" Why not try copying that prop texture into one that does have the problem?

Just a thought.

It's not a texture issue as it is on the untextured model. *-)

It may well be along the lines of Dereks suggestion :dunno:

Thanks fellas, should have tried here first!

Now, I know nothing about modelling these aircraft so I Googled "Disc Bloom" and came across a very interesting thread on Freeflight Design Shop. Quite a few famous designers, at least one from here, discussing this very thing in technical detail. From what I could understand, which was probably not much, it seems that this effect is intentional and as Derek says is part of the model. I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick (quite likely) but they seemed to be discussing ways to achieve it. In other words it's regarded as desirable.

So, it seems to be one of those things which is a matter of taste. It may be that my system is not rendering it in the way it should but it is not to my taste. All I can see now is that flaming white spot in the prop disc.

As Lady Macbeth said (albeit in a different context) "Out damn'd spot".

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete

I wonder if your particular card doesn't like It :dunno:

On the Argosy (in FS9) there are nice light beams from the landing lights....aparantly, but me and at least one other I know have cones like the dambusters due to the way my graphics card is reading it.....I't OK on my othr machine :)

Other models do similar

Just a thought.

I know the effect thery are trying to achive and it does look a bit extreme on your shots. I guess the only way to be sure if if you could see it on another machine *-)

Problem for any developer is they can only work on what they see on their systems with input from a test team.

There is always a posibility that not everything works 100 percent on all systems in all conditions :)

Hi Garry,

That's more or less the conclusion I had come to :((. That said, my pics look very similar to the ones on the thread I mentioned so it could just be my perception.

Still, whatever, it appears there is nothing I can do about it. It's a pity though as they are rather good models. C'est La Vie :|

Pete

Hi Pete,

Apologies for my short reply earlier but I was literally about to set off for work when I noticed your post.

You found the topic at FFDS....I was going to add a link but it blinds me with science as well.

I think the effect tries to replicate the flicker of sunlight on the rotating props and as noted is part of the material setting for the prop disc part in the model. You say that it occurs on three of the four aircraft in the package...the fourth may have been made by a different developer who used different material settings.

C'est la vie indeed 8)

ATB,

Derek ;)

Hi Pete :hello:

Hopefully there is someone here who has the same package and can post shots. TBH with you, I don't like what you're seeing there mate and I don't care much for the thickness of the panel lines either ;)

Hi Pete

I have been very carefull with how i have done my Jetstream's disc bloom as i wanted the effect but not the bright spot.
mine is more subtle and looks better i think but none of my texters have show any screenshots since i released the latest beta.
