FS2004 Aircraft Carrier placement

Hello,

Today I've read a thread over at Sim-Outhouse about aircraft carriers and that reminded me that I've always wanted/desired a carrier a couple of miles off of Plymouth (dont like flying miles over water) so that I can practice landings on. 'Motormouse' over there, says that scenery may already be available and if not can something be easily created?

Not that I will be in a position to try it out today as am stuck down my local flying club waiting for the snow to stop. Least have a sleeping bag in the back of the car, if things go downhill rapidly. Snow showers go through quite quickly, but they are all in the direction of home, so will see what happens in the next few hours. Knew I should have stayed home this morning.................

Best wishes,

Martin

Hi Martin,

With FS9 the ship appear where ther developer puts them as they are static objects. I think DG may have put an old Alphasin Hermes off the south coast somewhere, but not sure if its still kicking about in that form. Obviously FSX is a different kettle of fish.

Ben,

Thanks for that. I once tried to change Shep's Plymouth/Falmouth marine AI , subsituting a moving oil tanker for a carrier. Although this worked for a few Type 22 Destroyers, the carriers didnt show. A static carrier a few miles off shore would be ideal.

I have forgotten the file title but there is an Fs2004 scenery file that places 20 USN carriers in different positions around the world. One of these positions is just off Portsmouth anchored between the mainland and the Isle of Wight. It is possible to land on that carrier in a Chipmunk (without hook) or by helicopter or by applying Bob B's arrester wire/catapult gauges you can go aboard in anything from a Seafire to a Hornet.

DG's ex-Alphasim Hermes sits a few miles SE of the IoW and is landable. Flying Stations Ark Royal is a bit further out to sea in the SW approaches roughly between Devon and Guernsey and if you have the Alphasim payware Enterprise, one of it's stations is a few miles off Plymouth. The benefit of any stationary ship is that you can adjust the wind to make it come over the bow (though in the Auster, this makes little difference)

Hi if you just want a carrier to land on, why not download the USS Stennis(CV-74) from Avsim/Flightsim. You can move this carrier to where ever you want to in FS9. You just need the BGL compiler installed, other files are in the download.
regards..Francis..

ps. not worked out yet how to change the coordinates after moving the carrier for the arrestor cables etc etc. *-)
