Windows 7 Upgrade

Now that I've finally badgered my PC supplier into issueing my "free" Windows 7 upgrade, do I need to back up everything off the PC C: drive before applying the upgrade?

I have Flightsim and some other stuff on the D: drive. Presumably that will be untouched by the new opsys, but will any payware registrations need to be re-installed?

Starting to wonder if Vista is so bad after all......

Hi Allan.

This thread covers everybody's experiences so far: http://www.cbfsim.org/cbfsim/cbfsBB/vie ... 32&t=18170 particularly the last few posts.

Basically, if you're upgrading from Vista it's easy. If you're upgrading from XP it's a can of worms and probably best to leave it until you replace your PC. I've seen it referred to in magazines as Windows 6.1 or Vista SP3!

With Vista you can leave all your progs and settings in situ although it's probably good sense to do a backup. When you insert and run the upgrade disk it will spend 10 minutes analysing your hard drive and will give you a report on anything that may not be compatible and what to do about it. It will ask you to remove the disk, follow any instructions given (download files, remove a program etc), reboot and then reload the disk. It will gather all your progs and settings and store them away somewhere while it upgrades the operating system and then put them all back in the correct place. It'll take 2 to 3 hours depending how much stuff you've got on your HD. It might ask you to remove or at least switch off your AV.

I've done it on 3 laptops and all went smoothly. Please note that Windows 7 doesn't use Windows Mail, it's replaced by Live Mail and your accounts will be transferred. Also Windows Movie Maker, photo gallery and one or two other things are now not part of the OS but downloadable separately as Windows Live.

Go for it, it's really nice!

Ian

Ian,

Thanks, doesn't sound like a Microsoft experience at all............
