Classic British Flight Sim

Hello all

I am contemplating dusting off Mr Maltby's BAC 1-11 and taking to the virtual skies.

I do almost all of my flights on Vatsim as it provides great interaction but when flying an old bird like this I am concerned about the navigation. With modern rules I need to be flying an RNAV equipped aircraft. What do the currently flying BAC 1-11s use (eg the ones flying at ETPS )? Have they had an FMC fitted?

last question :roll: what do you chaps that fly on Vatsim do about this?

This may sound stupid, but what does the Navigation have to do with an FMC? Sorry if its a silly question... its been a busy monday

Well I dont know. im wondering how I can fly current RNAV routing with this plane. normally there days an fmc would be used to input the plans arrivals and departures. I guess computer systems are frowned upon a bit here but I am not sure of the best way to handle this to keep within the rules on vatsim its harder now just to fly vor to vor for example.

I'm no expert, but I imagine its done paper based? Hopefuly one of the current pilots can give us some idea.... Maybe Tonks or HC know how it works

I use the 1-11 a lot. You can use the in-built FS GPS. Personally I use radio nav (VOR/DME and ADF) with en-route area charts. You can usually find something to base a leg on using a VOR somewhere adjacent and allowing a bit of offset or by using cross cuts from beacons to the side of your track.

The only "real-life" 1-11 flight deck I've seen for many a year is the Omani one at Fairford. There is a multi function display fitted on the pedestal which I presume is a GPS fit. Don't know if the aircraft is RVSM capable but if not, then you are limited to FL280 max which shouldn't be a problem on a typical 1-11 sector length. If you're doing some of the IT Charter classics from the 70's/80's down to Southern Spain, Sicily, Malta, North Africa and Greece this might give you a problem with fuel burn but in those days RVSM didn't exist so go for the best levels (normally 290/310 for the 500srs going up to 330/350 as you get the weight down or 330/350 for the 400srs).

From a real world perspective -- the answer is NOT much -- we have several Non R Nav equipped aircraft operating for us
you just can fly RNAV SIDs and STARs everything remains the same -- as to FMS/FMC -- well those tend to break occasionally and can be flown without -- its called "pilotage" a concept which seems to be now lacking both in real world and now it seems in the Flight sim virtual world -- I have flown the 1-11 and Comet in Vatsim quite a lot and have had no problems ---- Bahhh humbug -- computers!!! who needs em??

Agreed!!!! Last night on VATSIM using D-ALFA (DM's Hapag Lloyd 1-11 500) I flew the NIE5G SID out of EDDV manually (no autopilot to within +/- 5kts and +/- 100ft. Takes a lot of concentration, my partners question as to whether I wanted a coffee was responded to by a grunt, but it can be done. Two different generations of flying, FMC/AFCS is great for modern flying but not for the 1-11. If you want to simulate the 1-11 in its latter years, use the inbuilt FS GPS.

As a footnote, when I was with BIA, 2 of our -500s had a single OMEGA fit. The control unit was mounted at the rear of the pedestal (I used to play around with it on jump-seat trips!). Is there a FS9 OMEGA available anywhere?
