Comet

Got the Comet and quite like it (216Sqn). I have taken it for a fly around the Boscombe Down control zone and I'm shortly going to brave the weather and fly over the Bristol Channel and land at Filton.

The only things I can't work out is, where the yaw damper is, engine sync. And the engine smoke I know is written for FS9, so I guess I could move the smoke?

Hi Ant... the instruction to change the smoke to the FSX ones are in the readme ;-)

From the readme file....
FSX Install
-----------

This is an FS2004 model, but it does work in FSX with a few minor faults.
The main faults are :-
black landing gear
Kneeboard can no longer view multiple pages
Built in VC view controls do not work correctly

Install in FSX is different because they have changed the folder structure.
\Aircraft = \SimObjects\airplanes

Extra sounds for co-pilot calls & takeoff config warning need files editing because they've changed the folder structure.
The panel.cfg in '\DMFS Shared Files' needs this line modified...
gauge32=dsd_xml_sound3!dsd_xml_sound3, 2,2,5,5,.\Aircraft\DMFS Shared Files\DH106 Comet 4 Panel VC\DM_COMET_sound.ini
change it to be...
gauge32=dsd_xml_sound3!dsd_xml_sound3, 2,2,5,5,.\SimObjects\airplanes\DMFS Shared Files\DH106 Comet 4 Panel VC\DM_COMET_sound.ini

The file DM_COMET_sound.ini in '\DMFS Shared Files' also needs the paths editing.
For example...
Sound00=./Aircraft/DMFS Shared Files/DH106 Comet 4 Panel VC/ALERT.wav
Will need to be...
Sound00=./SimObjects/airplanes/DMFS Shared Files/DH106 Comet 4 Panel VC/ALERT.wav

The smoke effect also needs a file edit to work properly in FSX.
Each aircraft.cfg file has a section called [SMOKESYSTEM]
Remove the first 4 entries, then edit out the '//' from the last 4 entires.
The end result should look something like this...
[SMOKESYSTEM]
Smoke.0= -9.9, -13.0, 0.00, DM_COMET_SMOKE_FSX_R
Smoke.1= -9.9, -11.0, 0.00, DM_COMET_SMOKE_FSX_R
Smoke.2= -9.9, 9.0, 0.00, DM_COMET_SMOKE_FSX_L
Smoke.3= -9.9, 11.0, 0.00, DM_COMET_SMOKE_FSX_L

Thanks to Ben Watson for the FSX smoke effect.

Hi Ant..

To the best of my knowledge, the Comet didn't have a Yaw Damper and thus the model doesn't have one either.. not that I've ever seen or used :) Not sure what you mean about engine sync. If you're using a throttle quad.. you'll have to drop your mouse over each rpm gauge in turn to read what you have them set at then spend an hour trying to get them all the same. If you're using a stick or a single throttle.. they will all be the same anyway. Don't forget.. this aircraft was first of breed ;-)

I'm loving this aircraft, I got the yaw damper and sync from the checklist, so that may well be why I can't find it in the actual cockpit.

Just about to pass over lands end as we speak, FL230 ;)

Hi Ant..

I couldn't see the 'sync' reference but I did see 6. Yaw Damper :o I've checked the panel.cfg and there is no reference to a Yaw Damper gauge so I'm not quite sure where DM got that from. Perhaps a consequence of using a checklist off another of his models modified for the Comet :think:

Hmmmm, speaking of DaveM he has been very quiet of late unless I have missed some of his rare appearances.....could this be an omen for something linked to FS?

Nigel.

I doubt it Nigel... family life is a much higher priority for DM these days... and rightly so. Hes still flying and doing all the backend stuff at the VA which keeps him busy ;-)

Cabin temp and pressure, as most of my aircraft do this automatically, is it simply a case of keeping it out of the red? The DM site says so, but surely there's an actual operational procedure? Like, what is cabin alt? Where SHOULD it be? Why set 2000 at take off and no more than 8000 when cruising when we're actually at different altitudes?

Thanks for the update Ben, unfortunately have not done any flying at all on the VA so have not been down there for a loooong time, going to have to get myself back up in the air sometime soon as do miss it but so much to do around the garden and home at this time of the year, apart from that have spent ages doings vids instead!! :$

Ooooop sorry, getting side tracked here!! :roll:

Regards
Nigel.

Hi Ant :)

There are many reasons for this.. the main one being that 8000ft is considered a comfortable altitude for passengers to exist. Above 10,000ft, oxygen is required (though you won't die above 10,000ft without it unless you go a fair bit higher) so.. by keeping the cabin pressurised to an altitude of 8000ft while the aircraft may be many thousands of feet higher makes sense. I can't remember off the top of my head how the Comets cabin pressure system worked but on the Vanguard, you set the pressure on the ground and the system pretty much takes care of itself. There are other adjustments that can be made but by and large, it was simple and effective :)
