How do you do this?

I've noticed that sometimes, when members are giving a link to a web address or a download location, they substitute a single word for the complete web address.

For instance they might just put the clickable word 'here' to take you to the address, which looks pretty cool.

How's that done, please?

Ian :)

Hi Ian,

When you type the link put the url into the first set of brackets after an equals sign, then what you want the link to say between the brackets, eg:

[ur=http://www.somewhere.org/my file.zip]click here[/ur]

I've removed the 'l's from 'url' so it isn't live ;-)

ATB,

Derek

Ian, rather than design a website from scratch there are plenty of Free Templates out there you might want to consider using, this is just one of many sites:

Jim - many thanks for all your advice over this. I'm very pleased with 3iX so far. Everything was set up quickly, efficiently and cheaply and the info is straightforward and easy to understand. The website of yours that you've linked to looks very professional (as does your impressive CV!). I'll probably try out one of those at a later date.

I don't intend to use this domain as a proper website, it's just going to be a front page for hosting some publications I produce for work and odds and ends. I mainly wanted the server space. But I might think of something at a later date.

The main project - which was finding a new home for my Dad's war memoirs - is still pending  I created it myself with Microsoft Publisher, with which I'm very comfortable. But it's starting to look dated (Dad's website ;-) ) and some of the features and pictures don't appear with the latest versions of IE or Firefox. So it needs re-doing when I have time. It may be a bit big for a template (10 pages) so I may have to get a more recent publishing program and start again! I'll treat him to his own domain name when I've done it - just in case he's watching from somewhere

I assume you mean Dad's website, Dave? It was one of the best things I ever did for him. I got him to write all his stories down some years back when retirement gave him too much time on his hands. Originally I turned it into a book for family members, then later into a website. It's linked to other WW2 websites and we used to get quite a few people contacting us about it. He was really proud of it and after he died I found a pile of bits of paper that he's written the web address on - for giving to people he met  Bless him.

Very few of the vets left, now :-( If you've got one - treasure him!

fantastic piece of History..well worth the effort of preserving and sharing. Thanks for the link. If you need any help with updating the site, I'm sure there's plenty of people on CBFSIM who'll help..me included

Alyhough it's very acceptable as it is.. The important aspect is the content. All you really need to do is duplicate it across to to the 3iX server as a totally independent backup. That way you know it's realtively safe and preserved!

Just a bit more info on the compatibility of older websites with newer browsers. The main technical problem with Dad's website was that some of the pictures and the main navigation bars were showing in preview mode but not when online. It may be useful to post the solution in case anybody else has created websites and finds the same problem. It occurs in both Internet Explorer 8 and in the newer version of Firefox.

It seems that these newer browsers can't handle groups of objects. For instance, I have navigation bars linking 10 pages and when composing it's much easier to group the components together and move them around as one object. Likewise picures and captions. But the new browsers won't display these objects. After composing the page you'll have to ungroup everything before saving. It's the same in Microsoft Publisher and Serif Web Plus (life's too short for learning Front Page!) so it's a browser thing rather than a program thing.

I had to spend a few hours completely re-doing all the navigation bars for Dad's website and gave it a freshen-up at the same time, but it should be good for a few more years yet! refreshed website

Anyway, hopefully this info might save somebody else some hassle sometime.

Ian :)
