VC10s - A selection

Whilst looking out some photos from the Michael harries Collection for Jelle (Archer) to use on his VC10 site, I came across these that I don't think have been shown here before. All photos are copyright The Michael Harries Collection/The Tangmere Military Aviation Museum Trust. In chronological order, they are:

Image
XV107 at Abingdon in 1968 - just two months old.

Image
Two fine examples of British engineering at Gatwick in 1969

Image
XV108 at Biggin Hill, 1970

Image
Three photos of the only (as far as I know) 3-engined VC10, Farnborough 1970

Image

Image
How things have changed - note the large cigarette kisosk and the "Plumrose" brand hamburgers!

Image
Two views of XV101at Biggin Hill, 1971

Image

Image
G-ASGH landing at Heathrow in March 1973.

Image
Abingdon 1981 - awaiting conversion after delivery from BA.

Image
G-ARVM at Cosford, 1985.

Those of you who have enjoyed the Michael Harries photos that I've shown here over the last year or so will, I'm sure, be please to hear that the complete collection (4500 colour slides from the 1950s to the 1980s) has been digitised and catalogued by museum staff thus saving them from the irreversible degradation of the film emulsion. Ideas are now being looked at to make them available to a wider public.

Excellent Pete.. tks for posting

I particularly like the shot of the ex-BA fleet at Abingdon. The majority (if not all) I've seen before show the aircraft in a very sorry state ;-)

Triv point...

What's the cigar shaped appendage under the starboard wing of '809?

I agree, Dave. I'd seen them from the road a couple of times and they looked very second-hand. This must have been taken very early during their R and R.

Another interesting point from the photography side is how restricted we were with film cameras. Mr. Harries was obviously unable to find a viewpoint without those cabinets taking up most of the foreground and had to compromise to get the shot. Nowadays we can happily fire away with a zoom, a crop and a quick photoshop and make it whatever we want

Thanks for posting those, Pete. They're very nice indeed.
