5 Reinstalls in a week...

Hi Chaps, just completely reinstalling everything from the ground up for the 5th time this week (all down to me makinging cockups with disk configs in the earlier attempts... don't rebuild when your tired  )

Anyway, my question is arround the GenX stuff. If I do a fresh install of FSX etc can I then just restore the Genx and FSX directories from backup? I don't think GenX writes to the registry, can anyone confirm this?

Should be OK I think  You'll obviously have to enable it in the scenery cfg unless you restore that from a backup too.
I moved GenX to a separate drive without problems.

Cheers Dave,

I had FSX / FS9 installed on the D drive complete with all the addon's and this was all backed up. I've put Vista back on fresh on C and installed FSX / FS9 plus all the patches on D. I'm now restoring the whole backed up D drive so hopefully all will be fine. Much quicker than reinstalling all those bloody DVD's

I can't see any sign of Horizon in the registry Ben (XPSP2) so as DG says.. it should be good to move ;-)

As one who is involved in a similar exercise at present I wish you good fortune!

May you soon be flying in fair winds and fine weather.

Cheers Hobby. It worked a treat.... other than that I had forgotten to install Acceleration before restoring everything, meaning the files were Acceleration, by the registry had nor record of it... but anyway, I got that sorted. However I have what may seem a daft question....
In FS9, the scenery.cfg file contained all of the addon scenery etc that had been configured.... however, it seems in FSX this only contains the default stuff. Does anyone know where the cfg file is that holds the location of additional scenery in FSX? :dunno:

With Vista how do i do a CLEAN FRESH install...?

Realy easy techy...boot up from the Vista DVD. Instead of selecting "Install" Select "Repair" and ir comes up with a load of options, one of which is a command prompt. go to this and you'll get an old style Command prompt.

Type

Code: Select all

Diskpart
then press enter.
Type

Code: Select all

LIST Volume
the press enter.

This will list all of the volumes on your hard disk and and DVD/ CD rom drives.

Assuming you only have one hard disk volume, and lets say its volume zero in the list...
next type

Code: Select all

SELECT VOLUME 0
(replace 0 with the number of the Hard Disk Volume shown in the list command)
then type

Code: Select all

DELETE VOLUME 0
This will destroy the volume on the hard disk. You can then reboot from the Vista DVD and it will see it as a completely blank disk.
NOTE!!!! You should be careful if doing this on a PC that came with Vista pre loaded or has a recovery partition as you could end up wiping it! Only do this if you have the MS Vista DVD and a proper license key and you realise you'll have to reinstall everything again.

If you have more than one Hard Disk volume shown when using the list command, post the list here and I'll try and work out which is which ;-)
