Hi NigelC -
I can't use real weather because my satellite link is not up to it. In both my FS9.1 installations I use a combination of Custom Weather and FSUIPC (the full registered version). This gives me a nice ground haze effect for bimbling along between 6000'-8000'. I am quite sure that can be extended - the nominal 'top' of the effect is 8500' and if you fly over the Alps for instance, there is a clear "tidemark" where the mountains poke out from the top level of the haze. At high altitudes, I get a slightly softer horizon, but the effect seems to vary with the season and time of day, as the screenies show.
As you don't seem to have FSUIPC, try experimenting with these settings in MSFS.
In MSFS startup screen:
Settings>Display>Weather.
Custom
Sight Distance 60 miles (the minimum available)
Cloud Draw Dist 40 miles
3-D Clouds 100%
With MSFS started:
Alt (to get the menus)
World>Weather
User Defined.
Dynamic Winds - rate of change Medium
All Weather Stations
Clouds=Few, Precip=none, Vis=20 miles
Advanced Weather
Clouds: Cumulus 2/8ths, Tops 6725, Base 5741. Same for Cirrus.
Turbulence none, Icing none, Precip none, base= -1476 NB that is a
negative number.
Visibility: Tops 8523, Base 0, Vis 20 miles.
You can also edit your FS9.cfg:
//MAX_UNLIMITED_VIS=96560
MAX_UNLIMITED_VIS=24140
The number is distance in metres.
NB- If you make this edit, and later make a change to the display hardware settings from within the sim, when you exit FS, the cfg will revert to the default 96560. If you are just looking at the hardware settings, use Cancel to back out, don't say OK.
Cheers, MikeW
