FSX framerate increase tip (but not a free one)

I've been suffering recently from very poor frame rates at certain times and places whilst using FSX. During multiplayer with only two aeroplanes in the sky I'm getting very rexpectable fps numbers. The same in less populous areas too...

On the other hand, after installing TrafficX and trying to fly from Orly to Luxembourg in the trusty old Euroair HS 748, frame rates are way down in the single figures and lags of up to 10 seconds every one to two minutes are incredibly common. Hard drive grinding can be heard a lot as well... But then that's pretty common in Vista anyway.

I don't have a slouch PC, it's not the newest, but my 8800 GTX card and Core 2 Duo 6600 should behave better than that.

It was only last week I noticed that whilst running the Orly flight in a window (to check that AS6.5 was actually delivering weather info into FSX) that my RAM useage was 100% and consistently there. So all that grinding and pausing must be Vista and FSX caching to the hard drives.

What to do? I spent a modest £70 on 4 GB of decent speed RAM (to replace my standard 2 GB).

Last night I tried the Orly - Luxembourg flight again and was rewarded with excellent frame rates out of and over Orly (14-24 fps versus the previous 3-4), and hardly any disk accessing at all. In the windowed mode I noticed RAM useage measured a consistant 64%.

So there you have it. Christmas cash spent... And FSX eminently useable again.

FSX minimum requirements needs to be upgraded to 4 GB RAM.

If you've got a bit of money left and a copy of FSX that underperforms... Why not treat your PC to an upgrade.

By the way I bought a this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... subcat=813 which has great reviews and a good price.
