Hi Techy, it certainly was a 100, but I think it did start life as Mk50 before being upgraded

Interesting too that it's civvie code was G-HAWK - I saw a pic of an old beat-up Sea Hawk, WM994 for sale in the US registered as G-HAWK as well. This was back in2004 - can codes be struck-off and re-allocated?
Nice paintwork so far regardless

I'm pretty sure Codes can be realocated in the US, but this isn't alowed in the UK register (to the best of my knowledge)
My guess is that sh may have been a non flyer and someone had painted this reg on her?

UK registrationes as a rule can't be re allocated. There was a brief period when they allowed it on at least JCB HS.125's with two frames taking G-BJCB but then it was stopped.
There has been the odd occasion where it has happened with special permission as in G-AHDM a scrapped Halifax registration given to the Aerovan with a Hurel-Dubois wing for reasons of image (Hurel-Dubois Miles), or sometimes by error, but generally it's a no no.
As Ben says it may not be a flyer
A number of static aircraft have worn G-WIZZ for example including the Cambrian Viscount cabin trainer but a Bell JetRanger was the real one.
Other supposed examples of re registration are not what they seem.
When a Short 330 was given G-EASI there was a bit of an outcry saying that was a reg that belonged to the famous Imperial Airways Vimy Commercial.
In reality it is a seperate register as G-E being the UK mark at the time and G- starting with AAAA and following is an entirely new register which means eventually all the original G-AU G-C, G-CY, G-E, G-F, G-G, G-I, G-K, G-NZ, & G-U could, in theory be reused.
Having said that to save confusion with the original G-AU Australian register, the sequence was not used in the later register with G-ATZZ being followed with G-AVAA. Later G-AUTO was issued as a special mark to the Automobile Association on a Cessna 441.
Until the 1970's when out of sequence became a fashion and the rules were changed to allow this, an aircraft could not be re registered with a new mark in the UK. If sold abroad and restored it had to be to the original mark unless there was a major change to the frame and then special permission could be had.
Some returining aircraft had new marks and when it was discovered they already had UK marks the the new one was was cancelled and they had to revert to the original in most cases.

Heheh, you know I feel a bit of a pratt...after having you explain all that, it turns out the a/c I was telling you about was reg'd G-SEAH, not G-HAWK.

Quite frankly I have no idea how I confused the two...all I can think of was that it was a long day at work and my brain somehow fused the two together. Even then it makes no sense. Still, at least I am somewhat more learned about UK Civvie codes!

Hi Folks
Neil -
Apologies for off-topic.
Garry -
Not disputing what you've said regarding reallocation,
but was this for fixed wing only, or all UK regs ?
Reason I ask is -
it seems to have been common practise regarding rotorcraft
transferred abroad, within the same global organisation,
then re-registered with different tail numbers on return.
Not sure if still ongoing.
EDIT -
I may have misunderstood.
Are you saying -
Pre 70's - Must be re-registered with same ID
Post 70's - Could be any available ID.

That's for all
Perhaps not clear but the comment regarding having to revert to their original marks is in the last bit tying in the until the 1970's comment above when they started to allow aircraft to take new marks but clamped down on the same mark being reissued
Up until then it was a no no most times but after that point a lot was relaxed as it also allowed existing UK registered aircraft to take up new UK marks inbcluding out of sequence
Basically since then anything goes apart form re issuing a used mark
