Open DNS is exactly what it says on the tin and infinately safer and more secure than many of the current DNS servers runny by our beloved top ISP's. As a basic step you can simply change your DNS servers to the open DNS servers, but better than that, if you create an account (free) you can selectively block types of websites, or create your own. For me this means that when i go to sites that usually have gambling ads and the like, they simply don't show! very cleaver, very widely used (by loads of large multi nationals too)

Just visit www.opendns.com and forllow the instructions. :welldone:

Sounds like you have your DNS setting set on your PC too Tony. These will override whats on your router. Change the DNS setting on your PC too, and you'll be fine ;-)

Hi Folks

I've been using OpenDNS for > 14 months.

They have apparently been more reliable/quicker/consistent
than when previously using BT's DNS lookups,
and several other lookup servers I've tried.

I say apparently,
as I've comparative data for the identical timeframe.

Recently I'd actually found them to be slower than previously,
and had intended looking for alternates.

I also had't realised they now had European servers,
at least it would be explicable,
if it was still a Caliornia request.

You are still reliant on BT's routing to reach them.

When BT's DNS fails, (propogated cache poisoning),
BT can't route your lookup request to OpenDNS, (rare but happens).

Their site blocking is good,
though not sure I like the idea of Americans -
- deciding what I should view.
- logging my requests,

See
http://www.opendns.com/privacy/
http://www.opendns.com/terms/

(Similarly McAfee SiteAdvisor)

I wasn't aware of the other services,
as they weren't available when I setup .

PS
There's no need to sign up for anything.

Just set your preferred & alternates to -
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
