I expect it's there is so much "Gaffa tape" holding the RyanAir fleet together that the radar just can't see them anymore so they think it's broke

They did didn't they? Diversions to Belfast Airport!! :roll:A Ryanair spokesman said the airport should have had a contingency plan in place.

...which, let's not forget and avoiding as far as possible the delicate subject of Irish politics, technically a different country. After all I suspect there would be a stink if Heathrow had to suddenly divert half it's flights to Paris CDG and Eurostar them back to London because the radar broke down.
At the risk of being controversial I'm with Gobby O' Leary on this one, as Dublin Airports Authority's subsidiary, Aer Rianta, were not exactly keen on investing in Birmingham when they had a shareholding in that airport, unless it was in shopping. Within months of them flogging their shares to the Canadian Teachers not only was there serious investment in passenger facilities, but a swift planning application to extend the runway was submitted (something the Midlands have been after for a long time) and what is more, Ryanair decided to set up a base after previously falling out with the airport which, whatever your views on the airline, is something the airport needed to get passenger numbers up and reduce the haemmorhage of potential passengers down the M1 to Luton, or up the M42 to NEMA. Aer Rianta's lack of investment and interest in BHX seems to me could be a clue as to what has gone wrong at Dublin.
I know there's no love lost between DAA and yer man O'Leary but I do think he has a point this time. Still, I bet Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann were laughing all the way to their common bank accounts...assuming the cross border Enterprise service was actually working today.
