Kai Tak from FlyTampa...

I thought I would just try the Chequer Board approach now that I have populated Kai Tak with suitable Traffic...

I did the full procedure and here I am fully established on the 088 heading localiser...The chequer boards are just above the fin, with a red light on one.

Passengers can get a quick check on local time as they pass this point!

This is a truly wonderful piece of scenery...Thank you Fly Tampa. It is very well done.

Thanks for looking :flying:

Great shots again Peter :flying:
I wonder if the pilot that had to go around muttered 'Who is that little bandit on the runway??'

Thanks Jim...BTW this is new!

I notice that this WOAI B772 actually uses some flap and droop for take-off...This is the very first Traffic aircraft that I have seen doing that

He pulls them both in together at 280 kts in the climbing turn after take-off :flying:

The WOAI stuff is superb Peter, I've just reinstalled it after a rebuild of my PC and forgot how good it is. I'd love to see the Classic aircraft modeled as AI to this level of Detail. Its amazing what they can pack in with such a small hit on frame rate.

I've just edited that Ben, to add another shot...I love this WoAI stuff and have fitted nothing but theirs to this Kai Tak. I shall be watching from now on to see if any other aircraft use flaps for take-off :o

Yes Peter, its very clever. I've never seen that done before. It would also explain why when converting the likes of the Trident to AI, it doesn't rotate until its well up on speed.
Did you edit the flight plans to change the airport to Kai Tak?

The answer to that is a bit complicated Ben...I also want to keep Chek Li Kok running and as that was VERY crowded I diverted one third of each package to Kai Tak after adding "VHHX,N22* 19.01',E114* 12.11',0" to each of the relevant Airport.txt files. In that way I have reduced the pressure greatly on Chek Li Kok and got just about the right amount of Traffic for Kai Tak. I diverted the ones with a lot, like Dragonair and Cathay Pacific by setting the Edit > Replace and then clicking just the "Find next" button 20 times then the "Replace" button 10 times and repeating that sequence till the end of the file. Then a re-compile of course. I found 42 of my WoAI packages to edit in this way.
BTW...If you use the excellent freeware for Chek Li Kok with a folder name of "vhhh2005b" then there is a bunch of apartment buildings that is not compatible with the Fly Tampa Kai Tak...They stick up out of the water and some fuel storeage tanks at a dock terminal. This can be totally fixed by going to:-
X:\................................\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\vhhh2005b\scenery
And disabling the very last .bgl file called "tm_aprt.bgl"...just rename it to "tm_aprt.bgl.dis" and those grey apartment buildings will disappear
BTW if anyone wants the list of 42 WoAI packages that can be used in this way, then just ask and I'll put up a list.

Peter. When I installed 9 Dragons, I followed your advice and tutorials to load all the current HKG World-of-AI traffic and divert it to VHHX. Of course, in 9 Dragons, CLK didn't exist so I diverted ALL the traffic to Kai Tak and reduced it to 50% or less to ease congestion. So now, I'm faced with a quandary as to whether or not to re-open CLK and use both, like yourself
I might do what you've done and divide them up into two thirds/one third. Or I might send all the airline traffic back to CLK and keep Kai Tak for my RAF C1Ks, C130s and AWACs and my classic VC10 and 742 charter flights. The jury is still out on that decision

Anyway, it would be much appreciated if you could post the up-to-date list of WoAI traffic for the area so that I can check I've got everything (still haven't deleted Oasis because I like the livery :-( )
As I fly mostly airliners, I wanted to check that the standard Rwy 13 approach didn't clash with the CLK approach. It should be OK as you cross CLK at 4,500 feet as in these screenies.
A useful tip from the 9 Dragons manual (not that Peter needs it

) when landing airliners on 13 is to judge the beginning of your turn-in by using the marker audio switch on the radio. When the middle marker beeper stops, count to (for instance) 5 (in the case of the VC10 or Trident) and then start your turn. Practise will help in finding the most suitable point for whichever aircraft you're using.
Cheers
Ian

Ian,
Traffic for runway 13 will generally be vectored just a bit North of CLK and at 3000 feet, which strangely enough does not ever seem to conflict with any CLK traffic. I will assemble the list of 42 and post it here later today.
Naturally, if you are flying the full proper procedure then you would intercept the localiser and glideslope at about 6000 feet heading on 045 and passing over the Sierra Lima NDB (Sha Lo Wan 268.00). But this higher vectoring on has not been built into the ATC Approaches code for Kai Tak so the AI Traffic will be lower. Rewriting the code would be a tedious project as I have already done that a few times with my base which has some similar terrain problems. Adjusting the code might just need one number changed in several places but I don't really have the time to look at it at the moment.
Edit...The procedure as published by Fly Tampa:-
Cross CH VOR (Cheng Chau 112.30) at 8000 feet
Heading 270 for 7nm, descending to 6000 feet
Turn to heading 045 passing over SL NDB (Sha Lo Wan 268.00)
Intercept the IGS Localiser (KL 111.90) heading 088
Descent to 4500 feet following the IGS Localiser and Glideslope
Pass Outer Marker at 1730 feet slowing to approach speed
Reach the Middle Marker at final approach speed and 700 feet
Look for Checkerboard and Lead-in lights
Shortly before or at the Middle Marker disengage the Autopilot and Autothrottle
Begin a right turn
Use the RW NDB (Hong Kong 377.00) for precision runway alignment
All that is their words and not mine

Thanks for your reply, Peter.
Just to clarify, in the Trident I was flying the full procedure from the standard approach chart, which is reproduced in the FlyTampa manual and is as you have reproduced above. Starting the approach from Cheung Chau at 8000ft; so the screenies show where the aircraft would be in relation to CLK. I haven't used ATC for an approach other than to request landing permission to slot in.
But, as you say, the AI traffic will be coming in to Kai Tak in a less disciplined manner, so it will be interesting to see if any conflicts develop with CLK
Cheers for now
Ian
