Vista SP1

Has anyone installed this? (I think Techy said he had)

MS advise that it should be installed from Windows Update but when I try it says that there are no new updates. The MS website indicates that if certain drivers are installed on the computer Windows Update will block the installation of SP1 until they are updated but from the list they provide I don't seem to have any of these drivers on my system anyway.

Clearly there is something on my PC it does not like but does anyone have any ideas as to how I can find out what it is.

Thanks.

Pete

i have Vista SP1 on the laptop but that was installed in slipstream version of Vista with SP1 intergrated...

I am aware that if you upgrade from XP to vista you could be asking for trouble as old Xp drivers could be hanging around...

Hi Pete. We've got three laptops running Vista. On mine I downloaded and installed SP1 from Microsoft Downloads with no problems. I know it's installed because if you go to Control Panel/System it says Service Pack 1 at the top. I decided to let the other two update themselves from Windows Update and forgot about them. I've just checked and neither of them have SP1 installed yet. Maybe MS have delayed it a while?

You could try downloading from MS Downloads and see what happens. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en

Thanks Guys.

I had thought about downloading it direct from the website but it is a 434MB download. I might give it a go but I am a bit concerned that if it won't download manually from Windows Update there is a reason for it!

Hmmm. Just had another look at the link I gave you, Pete. I'm sure I wouldn't have downloaded 434Mb - I haven't got that much patience! Image

I also saw this note: "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is available on Windows Update." So I guess my info is a cul-de-sac. I think they must have decided to route all SP1 installations through Windows Update in view of the problems. So if it puts your mind at rest, I have two Vista laptops that haven't updated or told me why - so you're not alone. I'll try and force an update in the next couple of days and let you know how I get on.

Hi Chaps,

Service packs WON'T install automaticaly. Depending on your settings, they may download automatically and prompt you to kick it off. I've had SP1 on my machine since it was released to Enterprise licesnse customers and haven't had any problems. On my work laptop I have tried to install it, but it caused a problem where the machine wouldn't authenticate properly with the domain afterwards, so I had to uninstall it. Microsoft were able to identify the problem as a piece of management software which we use was causng a conflict. The vendor of the management software has since supplied an update and all is well.

Just been having a look through the PC Advisor forums. The general consensus is that you can install the generic version of SP1 (the 434mb download) but it may cause problems if it conflicts with a driver. If you wait to be offered it through Windows Update, it will be specific to your machine and therefore reliable. A lot of people are still waiting and July has been mentioned as a new date for downloads. The clever money seems to be on waiting ...

Here's a typical thread: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index ... &forumid=1

And I have been reading this month's PC Pro about this.

Vista SP1 will not be offered if you have a potential problem.

Seven key items to check apparently

You can choose to download and force the install but you may need to read this afterwards:

Meanwhile, I'll stay with XP and Ubuntu :)
