Hi Dave
I appreciate what you are saying as this is unfortunately an everyday occurrance.
I have lost count of the number of times I have monitored suspect drink drivers and had them arrested but, with some-one being five times over the legal drink drive limit I cannot for the life of me understand how he was able to walk to the aircraft without raising suspicions, I have had two drivers arrested with that amount inside them and they were unable to even stand when removed from their vehicles.
Just surprised that he was even able to stay on the runway on take-off!!
Regards
Nigel.

I suspect that the legal limit for flying aircraft is lower than that for driving cars. I could be wrong, but if someone was 5x over the drink drive limit, I really would have doubts about them being able to taxi the aircraft out, let alone keep it on the runway!

I've never been tested (and I never ever drink and drive at all, I simply don't drink at all if I'll be driving) but I imagine I've been five times over the legal limit and still appeared completely sober to many people, especially after a night playing with the green fairy. It's amazing how little alcohol affects some of us. (Again I'm not saying anything about the legality of drink driving or drink piloting, it's wrong and anyone who does it should have the book thrown at them, I'm just commenting on how inebriated a person might possibly be if they are five times over the limit).
If memory serves a chap was pulled in Manchester not too long ago who was five times over the limit; his driving was fine and he wasn't totally plastered and if it weren't for the fact that he stank of booze and slurred his speech a little you wouldn't have known he was drunk.

I deal with intoxicated vehicle drivers who are 4-5 times over the limit every day/night. Many of whom are so used to drinking, their demeanour is somewhat normal and only a keen eye for alcoholics would suggest drunkeness.
From a road traffic point of view. This behaviour is normal, I'm sorry to say. People just don't learn! :-(

RE: My above comments I should have pointed out that as much as I'm not a drink driver I'm certainly not an alcoholic either. But one the rare occasions I do drink I want to make the most out of it.

Hi Chris,
apologies matey, I was'nt suggesting for one minute you were. I was just trying to make a point that some people are naturally able to hide the effects of alcohol intoxication better than others. Whether they be alcoholics or not.
Hope I have'nt offended you.
Anyway whose for a pint?!

The limit for flying is 20mg/100mls. Thus 4 times the limit would just pass the driving blood test, and 5 times would be 25% over the driving limit
