Confession Time

Hello,

I've just had a few days off (usual stuff - SkyJeep to Popham, Chipmunk flights, pubbing and walking) and as part of the latter I wandered into a certain GAME shop in Plymouth and due to the somewhat hot weather we are currently experiencing, I somehow believe I wasnt my usual self and came out with of all things...................FSX.

Well I never thought I would purchase it (I do blame the heat) and took it home and after speaking to an automated voice and sharing lots of sets of numbers (dont have a net connection at home), I am somehow quite pleased with what I have experienced over the last two days. It runs a lot better than I thought it would even if I set the fps to 20, but its early days and hopefully I should try and make some improvement over the next couple of weeks. I've downloaded SP1 and 2, but haven't installed them yet and intend to purchase the Horizon Generation X scenery for Southern England and Wales as this is the part of the country I'm normally found over.

I dont think its going to replace my FS2004 setup, as I am very happy with that, but I think it might stay in my other HD. As to aeroplanes they're doesnt seem that much support as what there was/is with the older sim, but I have Rick's wonderful Chipmunk (currently cramming as much of the real thing in before it gets way too expensive), his Foxbat and the Nordic Eurostar, so have plenty to try and keep me interested in the future.

I do have one little question - I have all the freeware VFR addon trees (for which almost all of Devon and Cornwall has been wonderfully reproduced). Is it possible for me to use these in FSX and if so how do I do it?

Well, I've rambled on for far too long and I never thought I would ever write an message like this!!

Best wishes to all,

Martin

You can use the VFR autogen trees, but as the folder structure for GenX is different to the old VFR scenery, knowing where to put them is tricky. I found a program on the net a while back that automated the process. I have a look for it when I get in from work.

Hi Guys

Hope George Davison doesn't mind me uploading the file to my webspace :worried:

Hi Rick..

Is that exe purely for installing already downloaded files?? I was living in the hope that someone (at last) had plumped all the trees in one file and you hit the button to get full area coverage

Hi Dave B

it's a utility to migrate the autogen from your FS2004 VFR scenery to Generation X.

there is no easy way unless you make an all in one folder which is a war & peace essay in it's self.

Rick

Hello Mate..

That's me out of the running then as I always found the original stuff a pain in the proverbial. Download one bit and the readme said you need this bit first.. download that and it said you needed something else!! Lost the will to live very early on so didn't pursue it further
Visual Flight no longer have the VFR libraries available and I've just spent 30mins trawling the Horizon site without luck so me thinks I'll remain bumpy but baron :worried:

Rick,

Thanks for posting George's program link. I think I had read of it in the past when browsing through the FSX forums, but wasnt quite sure what it was or how it worked. Have ordered a copy of Horizon Gen-X V2 Volume 1, so when this has arrived will try and populate my scenery with the autogen I have. Think have everything that has been produced, so if anyone has anything missing, please PM me and I'll see what I can do.

Tried FSX with SP1 last night and noticed a difference - ran a lot smoother and have discovered through trial and error that it seems to run quite smoothly at low fps settings. Flew the Foxbat with my TrackIR and it was nice and smooth with most of the sliders to the right. IR seems to work a lot better in FSX, or is it just me? This was something that I wasnt expecting as having read of so many FSX woes in the past, these put me off the purchase. Will keep it on my system, but think will go back to 2004 for most of my sim flying.

Did try SP2 but it seemed to make things a little worse, so un-installed that. Seemed to judder a little at the same settings and panning with the IR was a lot more difficult.

Thanks again for everyone's help, it is as always so much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Martin

Hi Martin..

Did you already have all the VFRPhoto trees or have you just downloaded them from somewhere??

Had them already as use them with the FS2004 photo scenery. But most are still available from places like 'Sheps Shed' etc. Apologies for not replying earlier but havent got much net access at the moment (am writing this in the tower at Bodmin Airfield).

Hi Martin..

Well.. I'd sooner be where you are than where I am now so I'll let you off  Rick sent me 100mb of VFR autogen yesterday and he too realised that some of the original sites are still up and running (though some with errors). I dropped the pack in as per instructions and used the tool to integrate them into GenX then started up the sim and nearly fainted :o Thought I'd have a look at Bembridge first so selected that airfield and waited for the sim to load. Up came a message 'unable to find file' (or read from file).. I clicked ok.. the box went and so did FSX :o :o
No sign of it reduced on the toolbar so I double clicked on the FSX icon towit I got another box.. Flight Simulator is already running!! :o :o :o In the end.. I realised it had totally locked my pc up and the only alternative was to hit the restart button.

Fortunately.. it all fired up ok after the restart and has been fine ever since... phew! :worried: There were rather a lot of agn files in the 100mb worth Rick sent.. 30-odd thousand according to the count when the exe file had finished doing its stuff so I'm hoping its now sorted it's life out :)
