I tried out my new camera yesterday and I'm enjoying the new learning curve

Here are a couple of shots that I took at opposite ends of the zoom:-


This pheasant is taken from my bedroom window. He is some way out in the middle of a field...Zoom x18


The Brough is a very close macro shot.

I am enjoying this Lumix FZ18 very much and hope to get some nice aircraft shots with it...I'm toying with the idea of hopping into my Smart and taking it up to that valley in Wales where those enthusiasts get all the low flying shots :flying:

Thanks Dave...It is a 1/12 model of the one that T.E. Lawrence was killed on...My father had a similar one as a Combination. He spent many years restoring it

Off the top of my head your camera zooms to approximately 480 or 500mm (in 35mm terms) so you will get the Pilots' whiskers down at Mach.....

Whatever you do, take plenty memory, and plenty power in the form of spare batteries, otherwise the camera is guaranteed to switch off just as that gaglle of Hunters come by in perfect light.....

Yes Jim, I have already worked out that I need at least one spare battery and I went for the deal with a 1GB card...I wish now that I had gone for the 4GB SDHC card.

BTW I'm pretty sure I wouldn't see any Hunters

Heh, I got an 8gb card for my Nikon D50 and I sometimes find myself running out of space! I have a habit of going a bit mad on the shutter after being stuck with 24 exposures of 35mm for so long

Too true jonesy!

Another tip is if you want say 4 gig of space, get two 2-gig cards (and so on). That way if one fails or gets lost, you are not up the the creek with no space!

Can't believe how cheap cards are these days!

I am aware of at least two people who actually archive on their cards now - using a new one each time!

I normally just pick the best of the bunch, burn them to a CD and then bin the rest.

There are lots of articles regarding archiving, but this sums it up nicely: basically, if you want to keep images, do not just rely on CD..

Personally, my archiving is as follows:
C Drive - contains only images I am editing or using (copied)
D Drive - this is Backup '1' for all the images I keep - I use this drive to pull copies from.
External Drive: All original images are stored on the externall HDD.

I also use CD-R as a secondary backup.

I annualy replace the discs, and do straight copies.

I also *add* (on the basis that a HDD can fail at any time) a new external drive roughly every 18 months. I then move the original images to the new drive, and copy them back to the old external, which is then stored off-site.

I also have several Flash keys, which I intend to use instead of CDs from now on. (In fact, I have just placed an order with MX2 for another half-dozen 2 gig Kingstons).

A bit OTT for most, but I cherish my image collection, and, particularly now I am no longer archiving to CD, it is relatively cheap (at the rate I take images and replace external drives, about 35GBP per annum, plus maybe a tenner for the odd flash-drive. It's worth it for me anyway!

I may even stop using HDD storage altogther, as solid state is just getting ridiculously cheap these days - plus it saves space and wiring!!

Nice shots Peter....that Pheasant looks as if he saw you at the window....

The Brough looks superb...is it a Die-Cast or a plastic kit?
