widescreen tele's and resolution...

Chaps,

Someone out there might know this. I have a standard 4x3 format 19inch monitor so in 4x3 format resolutions include 1024 * 768, 1280 * 1024 etc.

Now if you move to wide screen, that changes as you have more pixel width, so resolutions take a different format.. e.g. 1440 * 900

I've been saving up for the past few weeks to get a TV, don't have one at the mo and am going to get a 37" widescreen ( i know the make and model so no worries there) but its resolution is given as 1024 x 768... how can that be when its widescreen format? To Widescreen TV's use oblong pixels (i.e. like bricks) as opposed to squares??

That should be 1024*768 and 1280*960...these are 4*3 resolutions...However, in answer to your question, I do know that some TVs use non-square pixels because my VideoStudio 11 does offer that facility, so that could perhaps be how they get a wide screen out of 1024*768. Personally, I doubt it and think that a more likely explanation is a 37" Normal Screen or it is a wide screen and the quoted resolution is a missprint

Hi Peter. 1280 x 1024 is standard 4x3 format, check you display settings. I checked several manufacturers, and they all quote 1024x768, so must be this oblong pixel thing then Peter. I'd never come across it before.

Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Sounds like it won't be a HD ready set, probably quite an old design... It might be fine for now, but probably not too future-proof.

Big LCD TVs are getting cheaper every week now (such as this). I personally would look for a higher resolution (1080 would do nicely!). I can't see ANY 37" TVs with 1024x768 on Ebuyer.

I'm not going LCD as when you compare the two side by side you just wouldn't. So plasma it is, and it will be the panasonic, which is beaten in all the reviews only by the Pioneer, all those setts are much bigger and more expensive. I've decided to to bother with full HD as I don't whach that much in the way of HD content, and the set supports 24P which is the film standard these days on blueray (which I won't bother with for a while yet.)

As it happens the purchase has been put back a bit as I've finally found a sofa I like so thats coming first... maybe next month. ;-)
