Isn't it ususal to have, if not a pilot, then an engineer riding the brakes?

Yes, but as it was full of passengers we can assume it was during pushback, and applying brakes to a backwards moving aircraft is not terribly reccommended. In this incidence I imagine having the aircraft sink a few inches into the turf and finding a couple of replacement aeroplanes for the flight is preferable to having 450 very scared pax with an A380 with a damaged tail.

Tug failure, eh? The article mentioned nothing about the tug operators sphincter failure.

Yeah, as far as I know you're supposed to have a brake rider at all times, but we all know it doesn't always happen either.
I agree on the sphincter failure. He's probably also got an employment failure now too.
