Help Please! I broke my Flight Sim..

Hi all,

Well my new year has got off to a flying start. This morning, whilst tinkering with FSX files, I added some add-on scenery files and then decided to remove them again and got this message. Once I clicked 'OK' the sim would still start.

Image

I was'nt quite sure exactly what I had deleted so I tried to repair FSX using the Disc. Once completed I got the usual FSX encountered an error and needs to close prompt. I looked at the error message and it shows this. Now FSX won't start at all. Or should I say it does fire up with the title screen before the FSX need to close prompt appears.

Can anyone please advise? I really really don't want to have to re-install FSX and all the GenX scenery. :brick:

cheers

Dunno if this will help much as I use FS9 but when scenery is installed and then removed...very often the scenery.cfg still has the information as your first screenshot shows. The Sim has become confused as it is looking for scenery that is not there so the scenery.cfg has to be manually edited with notepad to remove the now spurious information. Then restart the Sim and it no longer tries to load the missing scenery.

However, whether you can still 'repair' the situation I cannot say as you say that you have tried (unsuccessfully) to try another method to repair and the second screenshot is testimony to this.... :dunno:

Hopefully you could do a restore point to get back to before and then simply edit the scenery.cfg as advised......let us know how you get on.

Regards.

Like the Bear I'm an FS9 user so what I say may be invalid for you, but you can see if it helps

This type of problem tends to arise if you delete something which is being used by FS at startup.e.g. deleting the aircraft which is in use when you shut FS down will result in a failure to start FS next time. The usual cure for this is to delete the fs.cfg file, which I think will be found somewhere in your "My documents and folders "etc directory under a micrsoft games directory ( use the earch facility if you can't find it) .FS will then automatically create a default cfg file on startup which you will then have to tailor to your requirements

The alternative is to edit ( using a text editor like wordpad) the fs.cfg file to use a different scenery/aircraft set of files at startup

Thx for the replies so far gents. I have done as instructed and adjusted the fsx.cfg file. The cfg did indicate that the add-on scenery was pointing towards the deleted file hence it being unable to find it when I fire up FSX. However I deleted the FSX.CFG & the Scenery.CFG. Both files were rebuilt by the sim as you said it would do but alas I am still getting the prompt. Damn it! :@

**edit**
this is the fsx.cfg file opened up. As you can see its not even complete. It rebuilds it to this point before the error prompt.

I too do not have FSX, sorry. On my Windows XP machine FS2004 has 2 'scenery.cfg' files...one in the root of FS2004 and 1 at the following location.

C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\scenery.cfg

I'm guessing that this file (if it exists for FSX) still points to the removed scenery. :dunno: You might try to edit it like you did with the other file.

Hi Derek,

I would love to try that matey, however since deleting the fsx.cfg file it has reappeared or rebuilt if you will, but unfortunately the only part of it I can tweek is whats posted above. It only part builds. There is no scenery section to amend. WTF is going on??!! :brick:

Sounds good advice from Del.....if that also fails (EDIT: and I see from your reply that it has...... :'( )......then a system restore to 'happier times' .. xwink may save the situation.

Other than that it looks like you are looking at a re-install of FSX.... :-( But looking on the bright side.....at least you will have learnt from the experience albeit a darn nuisance I know... ;-)
