Classic British Flight Sim

Hello all

Got a quickie question regarding the superb Hawker Siddeley 748 package.

I've been flying it around for the last week on FS2004 (mainly circuits) but today I decided to take it for a longer flight from Libreville to Bitam (as seen in the World Air Routes Gabon Express HS748 DVD!) as my "real flying" was cancelled due to the awful UK weather

At a cruising altitude of FL150 the maximum speed wouldn't go above 190 kts indicated. At 3000 feet continuous cruise speed (ie 14200 rpm) fuel trim adjusted 20% fuel loaded 13 c it won't go above 212 kts!

Is this normal? Seems a bit slow :o

Hi Tony thanks for the info. Flight notes? Are they in the PDF that comes with the download? Great to see a forum for all these aircraft - fantastic freeware and better than alot of the payware around. Easy on the FPS to!

Yes I fly from Denham with The Pilot Centre. Mainly on G-BUFY (my fave PA-28). Supposed to be flying again tomorrow but the weather forecast is not looking good.

If you PM me your email will msg you next time I plan to go for a "bimble" if you want to come along. I'm based in Fulham. Always better to have two pairs of eyes than one!

I have understood the cruise speed must also be limited to safe tempatures of the engines,, ??
.... to keep them under 685 deg. Although I don't have much knowledge about it. except if you run them too warm....

It is great mate .......But bloody expensive and i haven't flown for a while now.......but a bimble sounds great.....don't it..... :flying:

We went to a considerable amount of trouble to get the speed right for the 748 and tbh.. it drove us round the bend at times However.. after much viewing of DVD's, reading of Flight Manuals and getting feedback from a current 748 pilot and ex crew, what you see in the model is pretty much bang on what these lovely old aircraft do/did in the wild ;-) They didn't go much for rough weather though a decent tailwind was always appreciated

At 15,000ft 190kts IAS is roughly just under 250kts TAS

I have just finished reading 'Flight Testing to Win', by Tony Blackman, he was one of the 748 test pilots and he remarks more than once about the lack of speed in the 748.
They were up against the slicker F-27 and had to keep pushing the 'rough ground' capabilities of the 748, whenever potential customers brought this matter up. Yep, Rick seems to have got this speed problem captured perfectly.

Thanks for all your replies! I therefore stand corrected ;-) and regardless of my "need for speed" it's a fabulous rendition of a lovely old British aeroplane - thank you Rick, Dave and team!

It's what U.K pilots do - normally during a break in our atrocious weather!
Take off, "bimble" around the sky doing nothing much, land. Home.

Am off to flightplan for tomorrow's flight in our club PA-28 although looking outside the window I don't think we'll being going anywhere so it will be a good excuse to save some dosh and go flying in the HS-748 instead
