FSX Vortices

(Unsure if this is in the right section, feel free to move it)
Anyway, I'm looking to replace the default wingtip vortex effect in FSX with a better alternative (there are many around). I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks it looks a bit static and angular. I experimented a while ago, but could never pin point the .fx file which corresponds to that particular effect. The file names don't exactly help, because there's so many which could be that effect!
But, if someone does have the answer to my problem, I'd be most appreciative... ;-)
Cheers!
Adam

Hi Adam,
I'm not sure there's a single file that's used for wingtip vorticees. For example, in the RealAir Spit.. the file is fx_RASSpit_Wing_vortex.. in the Alpha Texan.. it's fx_ALPHA_T6_WTVortices.. in DG's Hunter, it's fx_vapour_f6. Have a good look in your aircraft.cfg and I'm sure something will become obvious ;-) If I can find it, anyone can (I use myself as the lowest common denominator)

Dave, in FSX the sim automatically adds wingtip vorticies so they're not needed in the cfg. Trouble is, it doesn't always put them where the wingtips are
I think Adam is after changing the default ones.

Correct.
The placement of the vortices can be corrected by changing the wing_span section of the aircraft config. Of course, you'd have to remove the 3rd party effects, else you get two sets (one default and one addon) of effects showing up when you load on the G's!

Sri Adam.. misunderstood. I don't do FSX very often ;-)

Aha
FSX puts the wingtip trails where your fde tells it the wingtips are.
you can change position of the trails by changing the span/dihedral etc etc.
OFFTOPIC sorry don't know effect name but my guess is one or both of these 2 as it shows up in xtomdl temp files
fx_vaportrail_l.fx
fx_vaportrail_r.fx
possibly these 2
fx_wingtipvortice_l.fx
fx_wingtipvortice_r.fx
the default tip trail is most annoying as none of the beta testers through all tests seem to notice it's a single sided effect that dissapears when viewed from one side :-(

Hi Folks
Rick -
Twas not I
Tweek -
I'm not seeing the issue you describe here on my lowly PC,
though I didn't look closely at that aspect in previous versions.
Any effect can also disappear intermittently,
or appear planar/angular
if your pc is being overstressed,
i.e. changing viewpoint excessively.
That's not FSX's fault,
that's your sliders.
Similar to & probably most noticeable with 3D clouds.

There is a peculiar little corkscrewing vortice from each wingtip when you touchdown in some default aircraft (the Cessna is one) in FSX. It looks quite ridiculous and I've certainly never seen anything resembling that thing in real life
I haven't started FSX for about a year and mine has not been updated so perhaps they have gotten rid of that curly thingemy
