Hi Tonks
only one problem ?
Seriously now ;-)
sounds like the laptop is locking when it tries to hibernate/sleep.(not unusual with early vista)
if it can connect to the internet try Microsoft update (access from windows update page as an option)
let the update decide what you need then post me a list here.
Regards
Rick

As Garry hinted earlier, its probably the suspend or hibernate thing. You can disable this....
Control Panel > Power Options>
Balanced is probably checked. Click on "Change plan settings"
Then under the "Plugged in" list, change "put the computer to sleep" to never.

No problem Tonks... there are logs... not brown ones, but flight logs for the computer. After it does it next time, as soon as you start it back up, go to
Start> Then right click where it says "My Computer" and select manage.
In the right hand pane of the management screen, expand "event Viewer" then "Windows logs" Then click on system.
The first event recorded when the system starts up is "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 6.00. 6000 Multiprocessor Free." This is an informational event with Event ID 6009.
the entries preceeding this one tell what the computer was doing when it went TU.
Check the application logs arround the same time, as they may indicate if an application was causing the fault.
Let us know how you get on.

Just before the restart are there any errors or warning immediately befor in either the system or application logs? If there are post them here. ;-)

Hi Tonks
Right a google search for "Event ID 10005"
looks like a printer driver error.
have you recently changed printers or installed a new driver for an old printer ?.

Yep... but in the events preceeding that, in both the system and application logs, is there anyting untoward... (for arguments sake say the preeceeding 10 events in each log) All the events are time stamped so your looking for something at the time of the hang.

Strange on Tonks... looks like a hardware fault of some sort then. :-(
As the opperating system doesn't actually crash, everything just stops.

Back up all of your data and try the restore CD. What Make / Model is the laptop?

The HP stuff is usually very good. I've been using HP laptops with work for the past 3 years and they aren't bad at all, with generally very good driver support.
Fingers crossed you have it sorted.
