Problems installing updates

I'm trying to install the lastest Norton Anti-virus updates via the live update option. The product downloads the latest updates but as soon as it trys to install onto my pc it keeps coming up with an error mesage saying that it failed to install, I tried this a few times but still nothing happens. I tried to run a system restore going back to a date last week, but even that fails to install, the error message says system restore incomplete. I've never had this problem before so I'm starting to think that maybe I've picked up a virus, eek!

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Hi Marcus

I think you do have a sort of virus

It's called Nortons........really that programme is worse that some of the stuff it is supposed to fix

It hogs and glogs sustems and can cause problems and be difficut to get rid of :-(

I know this is not the answer you seek... but my advice and that of many others is to delete it and get a good one.

Even the shop here who sell Nortons as part of the new PC packages say it is rubbish but commerial deals mean they supply it..........but the staff won't touch it.

I think it's probably Norton doing it's hardest to confuse the issue too. I used it for years and suffered 'incomplete' updates on a regular basis. A box full of green ticks followed by an 'incomplete' msg with instruction to download again. Downloading again usually sorted it but not all the time.

You might also want to check Avast - another good freeware AV. Whatever choice you make to replace it, dump Norton as soon as possible.

Hi Marcus,

Save your pennies and buy Kapersky or Steganos Internet Security (Kapersky based). I never have problems with Steganos. Seems to trap everything.

I chucked out Norton and McAfee years ago. They are diabolical! Earlier I mentioned somewhere that my PC supplier’s favourite software was Norton because 75% of his maintenance business came from its users!

Save a few more pennies for backing up and have a look at Acronis True Image. It is superb and I image my drive C by regular schedules and can recover anything from it with ease. MS System Restore just doesn’t work for me.

One thing to note about Acronis (which is excellent) is that it doesn't support Tape drives. A good alternative is Nova Backup, but it depends on what you need. Best to weigh them both up.
