What is an M/F Beacon?

A non-aviation person gave me an accident report about a KLM Dakota that CFT'd in to the North Downs near Guildford in 1946. He wanted me to translate the 'Q' codes mentioned therein. That I managed to do, but the report also refers to the Croydon M/F Beacon. What is an M/F Beacon? I'm sure a multitude of souls here will know.
