Dumb Question perhaps..

Hi Guy's..

Toying with the idea of a system upgrade and without looking too far, do the new Core2Duo/QuadCore mobo's use the same pin array as say.. a P4 3.2HT cpu or, to put it another way, can I buy a new mobo that will accept all of the above

I'm being a cheapskate really and don't want to fork out a great deal if I can help it but at the same time.. it would be nice to be able to upgrade in the future without having to buy another new mobo when that time comes.

Any pointers/suggestions most welcome. SATA2 capability would be nice and.. is SATA2 the same as eSATA as I've no idea :dunno:

Hi Dave... unfortuantely not. The current intel chips use a LGA 775 Socket. There are various chipsets supporting the latest processors, but the one to look for is the 975x which will support all the nulti core intel chips. (some of the other ones do too.)

Dave,

It depends which P4 you've got. The early ones are Socket 478 (I have one of those unfortunately...), whereas the later ones are 775. If you have a 775 board, you MAY be able to use a Core2 Duo with a BIOS upgrade.

I've been looking at a cheapo upgrade recently. There are some motherboards about which support the Core2 Duo, but which can use my existing memory and (AGP) graphics card. There is one from Asrock which will update to DDR2 667 as well, although it will only take 2GB. It may not be too future proof (more of an interim upgrade really), but I could get to be running an E6600 for about £180! That should give FSX the boost it craves...

Let me know if you're interested in the details, and I'll dig out the details.

James
