809 NAS SHAR

Needing a QRA fighter to fly from my 'Atlantic Conveyor', I looked for an 809 NAS SHAR, but found there wasn't one anywhere.

Hardly surprising really as 809 only existed for a few months in the Summer of '82 during the South Atlantic Misunderstanding. For reasons best known to themselves the Sea Lords decided to paint 809's SHARs in a very pale grey scheme with the pink/blue roundels and this scheme looks very different from the other Task Force SHARs all of which were repainted in various shades of very dark grey while en route to the Falklands.

Accordingly I set to and did a repaint of the UKMIL SHAR, filename ukmilfrs1fs9.zip on their site and elsewhere. My file is currently on the UKMIL site filed under Guest Repaints, and you can see what it looks like below.

It really isn't meant to have any wing roundels either, the only national markings carried were the nose roundels, but then who else would be flying SHARs that far south anyway???

I'll post the file on allnodes and the CB Files site as well when I've figured out how to do it.

As you can see I've managed to harden the deck of the 'Atlantic Conveyor' and the container 'shields' are finished, but I have yet to add details to the deck, foremast and superstructure textures. Watch this space...

Hi Kit,

It was on my "to do" list... honest.

I've been looking into trying to make FSX AI models landable and some AI route of the Falklands for another chap. :-$

Can I ask what your using to model atlantic conveyor?

Ben,

I'm using FSDS3 because it's the only modelling software I have. I did look at GMax once and decided that as I don't have a PhD in lateral thinking I'd give it a miss.........

The superstructure and containers etc aren't too bad in FSDS3 but getting the hull the right shape is not so easy. I'm now on my 5th version and still not satisfied with the bow and stern really.

As FSDS3 won't allow you to make 'hard decks' (or so I'm told) I made a small AFCAD2 file to put a runway just under the deck, which seems to work OK.

Kit, a nice repaint. It was always the nicest looking scheme for the Shar, pity they didn't stay with it.

Andy,

Thanks for that, and I agree about that light grey scheme too. But apparently the pilots hated it, far too light for Winter Down South they thought. But even when some of the squadron a/c returned to Yeovilton later in the year they still retained it, albeit with 'Buzz Nos' on the intakes and some even had names. XZ499 was named 'Ethel' and I've added the script aft of the port roundel.

Chockhead,

Must have been a sad sight indeed.

The two pics you posted are just a couple of ones I have in quite a large collection now, but finding pics of the bridge structure and the aft heli-deck are almost impossible. I only have one of each so far.
