Going daaaan saaaaaf...not London though, Cornwall!

Heading off to Cornwall next week, was wondering if there are some aviation/Military sites down there I should visit? Old RAF bases, Museums etc.

We will be staying in Looe and going to the Eden Project, other than that its pretty much a run to wherever we want.

Any tips?

There is a virtual aviation museum there

Flambards has virtually no aircraft collection now. :sad: (can't complain too much its where our HAS.1 whirlwind came from)

Theres the shackleton forward fuselage (includes most of the crew area as well as cockpit)

Apart from that only the Gannet and Wessex are left, they might have gone by now too as they are up for sale (or donation if it keeps them from being scrapped).

All booked in to a place near Padstow now. Going for a meal on Wednesday at Rick Steins bistro (The Restaurant was stupidly expensive).

Will try to convince the good lady that a visit to the helicopter museum in Weston is essential!

It certainly is. I went a few months ago and loved it. I posted quite a few pictures too. Good thing is the ticket is valid for 12 months so when I go past there again I will pop in and have another gander at the beauties on display.

Just maybe worth a side trip to St Eval, just north of St. Mawgan.

You can see it for miles as it has a HUGE aerial farm built in the middle of the old runway cross. I say 'cross' as the airfield has a slightly unusual layout where all three runways cross at the same point.

It's been closed for flying for years, and one of the local roads uses part of one runway and the peri-track. On the north side of the airfield is the local church, which is inside the airfiled perimeter, and has lots of items relating to the station inside.

I confess to a little bias here as my Dad flew out of there a lot in the early days of the PRU in 1940 or so.

If you've an interest in dull pingers and bag freaks RNAS CULDROSE has a viewing enclosure and I think there's still a Bucc parked there. Obviously you're much better off popping into the FAA Museum at Yeovilton and watching some Lynx Gods....

Agree the main restaurant overpriced. May I humbly suggest even cheaper (better?) than the bistro is Rick Steins Fish and Chip Shop/restaurant. Bit basic accomodation - bench seats and you eat out of cardboard but the quality of the F&C excellent (grilled or battered) also you can have wine or whatever with it. It's on the quay near the old railway station (r.i.p.)

Thanks for all the tips everyone, will definitely be trying the fish and chips from Ricks shop, but we agreed that we would try other places too as I imagine Rick has caused a large loss of business. The girlfriend said the residents of Padstow call it Padstein due to the effect he has had on the place.

Had a great time down there. Little bit sun burnt, but well worth it!

Loved the Eden Project, certainly opened my eyes to what we recycle, which energy provider to use and where we get our fruit and veg from in future!
