Hi Nigel, glad you got it working but I'll still have a look today to see if I can see why the process, for you, doesn't automatically create the mesh.

Re a second copy of XP. I wouldn't bother. You could create two scenery config files, one for Ortho and one for TrueEarth and use either as you want. On the subject of the scenery config file avoid extra blank lines as XP will reorder your scenery if it encounters them.

Re no traffic - it may be that you weren't flying low enough. I've got traffic but have to be fairly low to see it.

Hi Nigel, to download Ortho4XP directly from the developer go here:
https://github.com/oscarpilote/Ortho4XP

Re your inability to download Mesh data - you may just have been unlucky. I did a quick test by removing the DEM data that comes with Ortho and had no problems downloading from viewfinderpanorama although I note that others have had the same problem as you. Have another go with a different tile to see how you get on.

One other thing... your lack of traffic is probably down to the fact that you don't have an overlay. I have X-Europe which covers Europe quite nicely but you can build your own for elsewhere with World2XPlane, or better still go to SimHeaven and download X-Europe - it's very good.

Hi Chris, just to let you know the link to the version you have is the same one that I also downloaded, I think I must be just one of the unlucky ones however, I am presently downloading X-Europe2 at your suggestion and will have a go with that and see what it brings, having seen the screenshots of it, it certainly looks to be a very good addition to have. I tried again flying with OrthoXP and went to night time over Lincoln but no lights from vehicles or even street lamps, back to daytime flew lower and definitely no traffic along the roads

Thanks also for the tip of using the config file for scenery so when I do get True Earth and before installing I will make a copy of it as it is then remove any add-on scenery entries to do with the UK and then True Earth can update it. Should I then wish at any time to have a change I'll replace the config file with the copy. Sounds a lot better than having 2 X-Planes on disks. Should have thought of that myself!

Once I have downloaded and installed X-Europe 2 and given it a try (tomorrow) I will let you know of the results.

Again, many thanks for your time and help.

Regards
Nigel.

No problem Nigel. I'm seriously considering uninstalling P3D so I can have more space for XP scenery - that stuff is addictive. I now have all of Italy, the Alps, most of the East coast of Spain as well as bits of Tunisia and Morrocco. And that's in addition to what I reported last time.

What makes it so addictive is that XP 11 is so good at handling photo scenery - no blurries, no juddering, just pretty smooth all round.

Hi Chris, I downloaded X Europe 2 and put it in, boy now this is something else isn't it? that coupled with Orth4XP has made flying even greater than before. Like you I am now seriously thinking of getting rid of FSX completely as it just won't compare with what I now have.

One question I do need answering is that in the Ortho4XP Folder after making up the tiles there is another folder named Masks, what do you do with them, had a look inside the Mask Folder and and all the Texture Numbers correspond with the ones in the Texture Folder X Plane apart from 2 which are Whole_tile and Whole_tile_blured, there is no Mask Folder in the zortho4XP_=52-002/textures.

All the same, I am now extremely happy with what I have and already added another tile covering Nottingham towards Coventry, just doing them when I can get out of the aircraft. Many thanks for suggesting X Europe. I may not now bother with True Earth as believe with what I already have will not be too dissimilar to True Earth.

For anyone else who is thinking of adding scenery to X Plane 11 even though I did stumble on the way with Ortho big time it was only through ignorance and lack of reading the manual than the programme itself, I would highly recommend it along with X Europe 2. it will make flying so much more enjoyable.

Regards
Nigel.

I have finally done it even though it broke me poor little heart, more in the sense of the amount of money I have poured into it than anything else.

FSX is no more, gone to that great big Recycle Bin on my Desktop, no ceremony when uninstalling this historic MS Creation, no emotion in respect of its' passing away into oblivion (apart from the spent money that is). :'(

I am now totally free from those frustrating frame rate stutters, buildings sprouting up from nowhere in front of you when flying low and other problems with limited amount of RAM being able to be used. Don't get me wrong and I hope I am not contradicting what I have just written but FSX was, as far as I was concerned quite good but after using X Plane 11 and went back into FSX after re-installing it, it was only then that I really woke up to the fact that it did not give me any pleasure flying in it. I have now moved on away from it completely and as a consolation, I now have around 65Gb extra free space to install more Orth4XP.

Last night I was on a flight from Wickenby to over where I live in Washingborough and circled over my bungalow before departing to Lincoln then watched the trains departing Lincoln Central Station before picking up the A46 towards Newark. To my great surprise and satisfaction there in front of me only one and a half miles away was..........The old RAF Station Swinderby, some of the hangers were gone as they had actually been pulled down, a new housing estate has taken the place of the barrack blocks and family quarters as well as an industrial site but low and behold the runways were still in place. This is bl**dy marvellous as I did all my gliding there in the seventies and to fly over it again had me circling round and round for quite some time, even in Orbx EU England it never showed up which was a bit of a disappointment and always longed to see it in a scenery package.

From there I departed towards Newark flying along the A46 dual carriageway until I came to Winthorpe Airfield which was used as an OTU during the war with Stirling and Lancaster Bombers but now houses the Newark Air Museum. You could see all the aircraft out on display though the closer you got the more fuzzy looking they became so a reasonable altitude was required. from there it was follow the A1 south to Grantham and that is where I returned back to Wickenby and landed.

Really enjoying flying VFR and will make it more of a challenge by reducing visibility to below 10 miles and see how long it will be before I get lost!!

I wonder if Orbx True Earth will have Swinderby on the map and also Newark Air Museum? I know these are minor points but I do hope that they are displayed.

The only downside to Ortho4XP is that when flying lower it flattens out but that again, as far as I am concerned, is only a minor fault as the scenery in X Europe 2 makes up for that.

All in all, I have yet to pay for any scenery add-ons, this is the beauty of X Plane 11 it is a versatile platform that allows you more freedom to add what you like such as the sceneries I already have and all that is needed when wanting to buy a new scenery such as True Earth, you can disable the present scenery without having to go through the uninstall processes.

Regards
Nigel.

I'm enjoying X-Plane so much, I've now gone and purchased the Rotate MD80!
Good job I'm working overtime tonight 😆

Initial impression, hits the frame rate a fair bit but downloading and installing the 2k textures helped that.
Rotate had some issues with their activation process for a few days so I was unable to fly until today.

Similar to the IXEG 737, I had to watch YouTube and do some reading to work out how to stop the plethora of warnings going off every time I advanced the throttles.
I must say, having now learnt the MD80 and 733, I'm quite disappointed that I've never bothered with complex aircraft before because it's a lot of fun.

Looking forward to the Rotate MD11.

You are not the only one

The fact that PMDG weren't planning to redo their MD11 for P3D was one of the reasons that I never moved to that platform, after years of use I was still flying it on a regular basis and still enjoying all the quirks. The Rotate MD80 turned out to be a good buy, not quite as good as the Lago/LSH Maddog (is anything?) but pretty close, so seeing that they were doing an MD11 was a crucial point in moving to XP.

I've just done a couple of night flights and the visuals are amazing, even on stock airports.

I have been looking at that though probably next year I will be buying a new computer so I can use VR and be able to run X Plane at higher settings but I think purchasing the Rotate MD80 will mean that my system may struggle to run it at a reasonable level. Specs: i5-4690 @ 3.50GHz, 8GB RAM Nvidia Ge-force GTX 760.

Pleased that you are enjoying the challenge with the MD80. Looks like I am going to have to start some serious learning before taking the
plunge. :help:

Have now purchased my first aircraft for X Plane 11, I have to admit that I am not a fan of digital cockpits and always preferred analogue instruments but one aircraft that really interested me was the one that alemaobaino had shown in one of his screen shots, the Aerobask Diamond DA62 and having viewed videos of the real aircraft in flight I just had to buy it.

Downloaded and flew it for the first time, absolutely brilliant aircraft, handles beautifully and my disliking of glass cockpits after flying this has been dispelled. Really pleased with it and enjoying X-Plane 11 more than ever.

Now all I need to learn is the art of using the G1000.

Regards
Nigel.

Just don't push those engines too far. It results in an engine fire... So I'm told 😉
