Another late entry into a thread, here goes:

The show you mention, "Most Haunted", I find to be the most mind-numbing piece of tripe to ever grace the TV screen. Everything they ever discover can be rationally explained, and they try to pass off pieces of dust and camera glitches as "orbs" to get the public excited. It's pure comedy and laughable, even moreso when you consider many are gullible enough to take it seriously. Never once have they found anything conclusive, and they never will. Why? Becuase in my opinion ghosts don't exist. They are a form of hope for many in much the same way as belief in religion and the afterlife is for many, and sprung to prominence in the late Victorian era when spiritualism was a popular pastime for many. The belief that ghosts of the dead walk amongst us is an off-shoot from modern monotheistic religions such as the big three (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). As a rational human being of course I conceed there are unexplained phenomena out there than we still don't understand, but I highly doubt any of it is caused by dead people floating about everywhere and long gone family members zapping into the head of a dead scouser making him look like a loon (and incidentally talking perfect modern English no matter which country or period of time they are from). As I mentioned earlier, the show is pure unadulterated comedy, nothing more. And even if you do find it necessary to believe in ghosts you've quite clearly far more to fear from the living than the dead given the murderers, burglars, rapists, bad drivers, politicians and crack heads out there.

Edit : I remember the Haunted Lincoln from when I was a child. I sat in my room and recorded a radio show about it where you could hear all of the switches clicking when the hangar was empty. :poke:

Hi Chris,

I take it your a regular viewer then?

Seriously though, as I stated on page one, I am genuinely fascinated by this subject and I totally agree that this programme has yet, to date, found anything that has convinced me or many others that ghosts exist.

Probably 99% of the the material and findings on the programme can be explained but its the other 1% of occurences that interest me and the other viewers. The programme is an overwhelming success in the UK with many viewers reporting strange phenomena during the transmission of the live shows. What do I think about this? Well I think many viewers are suffering from over active imaginations.

Like someone said earlier in a post, many hallucinations are down to the individuals personal perceptions. However I would'nt say the programme was 'comedy' purely because many of the subjects or topics on the show are centred around tragic circumstances where many of the alleged spirits were murdered or executed, hence the claims of a spirit presence as the souls are unable to rest. Perhaps I'm an old cynic, but that does'nt make me laugh.

The ideas and instances dealt with in all aspects of the unknown could be classed under the term supernatural which as defind by the concise english dictionary (2004) is "departing from what is usual, so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature, of an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; esp of a god, spirit, or devil."

Clearly as the definition concludes any supernatural happening is out of the context of man and the human brain in terms of fully understanding. So as humans, how can we say it's not or indeed is, a ghostly happening, when we really don't have the brain power and understanding to conclude otherwise?

IMHO, I think there is something else out there, and I feel it would be closed minded of me to think otherwise and even try to put an explanation to it!

Are you a believer ?

In 1953 I was 10 years old and living with my family in Officer's married quarters at RAF Dishforth in Yorkshire. My Dad, a Flight Lieutenant for 25 years was away in Woomera Australia, having flown Sir William Penny, Britain's A Bomb expert, and the dismantled bomb in a Avro York out to Australia for the Atomic bomb tests. I clearly remember one day the lady who lived next door coming round to see my Mum. The lady was in a very distressed state, crying non stop, and barely able to talk. Eventually my Mum managed to calm her down and get to the problem that had caused her distress. Apparently the lady had been working in her kitchen when she heard a knock on her door. Opening the door she was confronted by a young airman in a flying helmet and a leather flying jacket with a thick sheepskin wool lining. But he had no legs and was seemingly floating in the air. The sight that met her eyes struck her dumb and she could'nt speak or scream. After a second or two the apparition spoke simply 'I'm Henderson'. The lady could not tear her eyes away for what seemed ages, but the moment she did and then looked back, the Pilot had vanished. Eventually she managed to come round to my Mum for help, but by now the shock had set in hence the distress and crying. Obviously what she had seen was the spirit of some World War 2 airman who had lost his legs in a flying accident and presumably died as a result. Help was obtained for her from the Doctor and the Padre and she soon returned to normal, but all the time we knew her she was quite adamant about what she had seen, and somehow regarded it as a priviledge that the spirit had appeared to her.

I agree that what I've seen of "Most Haunted" is unconvincing, but I've had a "difficult to explain" situation which has left me with an open mind.

The night before I was to move out of the house where both my parents had died, I was sat reading (having packed pretty much everything away) when I heard footsteps in my bedroom which was directly above the living room. My first thought was that the dog had gone upstairs, but he was stood next to me, hackles rising and growling, so it wan't him. My next thought was perhaps a cat had got in, or perhaps there was an intruder, so I ran upstairs, but found nothing. Given the dog had heard it as well, I knew I'd not imagined it, but I just put it down to the creaks and groans of the house, central heating, and the fact the house had always made odd noises. So I went back downstairs and thought nothing more of it.

Five minutes later I saw a black shadow of a person come down the stairs and walk into the back kitchen, followed in quick succession by the dog who was barking wildly and really agitated. Suffice it to say I jumped out of my skin, ran after the shadow, but again there was nothing.

The whole thing probably does have a rational explanation, psychological suggestion related to the following day's move being one, and I must admit had it just been me in the house I'd have dismissed it out of hand. However, it was the dog's reaction in both cases which really spooked me. He was a very placid hound, hardly ever barked, never growled or became agitated, in fact he was a bit timid, but in this case he was really going for it, which to me meant he wasn't reacting to my actions. He never reacted to anything else in that way subsequently or before the incident, it was a one off, and that's why I've got an open mind about the incident. I'm not suggesting it was a ghost or anything like that, but there was an incident we both experienced which caused the dog to react in a way that he never did again, and that is what has puzzled me to this day.

I did also once nearly knock over someone riding a bike who was dressed as an RAF airman on the lane which runs past the former RAF Lichfield at Fradley, and who vanished as soon as I saw him, but that could have been anything from a tit on his way to a fancy dress party who couldn't ride a bike to auto-suggestion and hallucination caused by new medication I was on at the time, so I never really gave that any more thought, but the other incident has stayed with me to this day. Like I say, I remain open minded.
