Looked at the propeties on the Shut Down button but that is just different shutdown /sleep functions..a disable function would be good, the older method was far superior

My point was the stupidity of putting the button there where it can easily accidentally be clicked when searching and then shut down without a second chance that you get when it opens the options window...bad design a bit like renaming pics where the rename and delete are side by side but at least again you get the option to confirm

Right clicking in the IE option does not produce an Internet Explorer option??

OK Internet options on the main IE page toolbar had it

That's one is sort...opens now in the same window for an existing page and a new window for a seperate click on the IE icon

The RAM issue is that a 32-bit OS (any 32-bit OS) can only see 4 GB of memory. Windows makes this worse by reserving 1 GB for its own private use and not letting other programs even see it, let alone use it. So if you have a 8GB system, going back to XP 32-bit would just be throwing half your memory away. It's the same problem we had in the "good old days" with 16-bit OS and the 1Meg barrier.

Can you send a screenshot of one of the prompts your getting from Adobe? If your certain UAC is turned off it may be that your "Gary" account hasn't been given admin access properly.

I don't know what you mean about automatically maximising Windows as I certainly donnt get that, the windows return to the size they were before, unless I double click on the bar at the top to maximise them. theres no way MS would have changed that behavior so it sounds like a setting that someone has put on your profile

XP64 is rubbish. It doest suport any where near the number of 32bit applications that can be run on Windows 7 x64.

I can't help feel that someone has buggered up the setting up of your PC mate, as much of what you are saying is not standard behavior, however it is different to Windows XP and much moreso than Windows 95. I don't think it fair to expect an operating system released in 2010 to behave the way one did in 1995

Not easily until I get some photo software installed

After the last post I checked the Users and the only one logged on is Gary Administrator

UAC setting is set to Never Notify.

The maximise windows was after install...If I tried to move a minimised window up the screen as it approached the top it auto maximised, but that was a setting turned now turned off

Great now the IE windows are opening now as they should

I'm currently trying to find out if is is possible to sort the collapse and the Icons out

The collapse is perhaps the ,most annoying of all and it makes my work difficult as I am constantly flicking form file to file and as such they have removed my most used and useful action...I can see no reason why they should have done that.

Funny though it opens the fits window as an icon than the second and subsequent windows are all in a second icon...if I open IE64 a third one appears.

I can't connect my music keyboard to the machine...well I can but there is no W7 version of the software

I did load a driver despite saying it was only 98/2000/XP/Vista supported but there is nothing active there, just an empty display but I guess someone will come up with a W7 version soon.

I have been trying hard to get used to this especially over the last couple of weeks, but TBH I am more keen to go back to XP than ever, which is why I've stopped installing programmes.

Another option would be to try and get a usable working PC out of my two old machines...the last one has got a dodgy MoBo as suspected, and abandon this new one to just running Flight Sim...in other words not use it as a working machine, but with faults on both old machines I'm not sure if that would be a viable proposition.

Getting used to W7 is one thing, but that is just putting up with it

I don't like the way it looks and I don't like the way it does things. I buy a new system but am not really given a choice.

As I said above...in summary I don't like it and don't want it

The only reason I'm still with it is because I am trying to make it work but all I get is an increased loathing for it.

I'll see if I can get the exact wording from the Reader update....probably won't come up now I want it too.

I turned off and restarted and of course it didn't come up

Mostly I only turn it on first thing but I don't know if there is an update checker.

However, I didn't get the newer version inviting me to install pop up.

So..no props..I went to the site and downloaded it from there...and of course it downloaded faultlessly

I can't remember what was but I did remember another programme that did that...refused to update...I think it was a run-time error...anyway it wouldn't update existing but happily installed straight over the old version when done as a straight install...I was looking for the exact error on that one too.

If I'd remembered that before I wouldn't have installed but waited for the notification

So no doubt it will re occur on something soon so I'll grab it then

You don't need picture software to take screen shots in windows 7. Click Start > Accessories > Snipping Tool, click new and draw the crosshairs around the area you want to capture

OK.....when I have something to capture

This is a bit like owning an airline knowing that the Vanguards you've flown up until now are the best for you but find yourself having to operate Boeing 737's

Everyone tells you they are better...you try and change them to suit but you just don't like them and despite what everyone tells you, newer is not always better and the old one did the job very well and much better for you, but you're told that they won't be supported for much longer.

I like the analogy Garry One might also liken it to IE6 vs IE7/8/9. IE6 did everything I wanted from it and more but try and access a website with it now and many will just spit you out leaving you with no option but to upgrade (I use the word with caution)

Another annoyance


When I enter into the IE search box it starts the search automatically refining the results as more is type it

This is something else I'm not asking it to do or wanting it to do

Often, when searching something else crops up and I put that in the search box and carry on searching the results and when done just click on the search and activate the ready and waiting new request

I can't do that now as it doesn't wait

I'm not sure I follow, but if your meaning that as your typing you get a list of possible results. Its no different than tying the whole thing and getting the result at the end. Just ignore the possible results and keep typing until your finished. The results you get are no different. So basicly if you dont like what its sugesting as you type, you just ignore it.

Example: If I was wanting to search for "Vickers Vanguard" I could either type "Vickers Vanguard" and press enter or notice that when I've typed "Vickers V" one of the options is Vickers Vanguard so I can click on that instead of typing the full phrase, the results are the same regardless which way you do it.

"EDIT" I think i see what you mean now. If something else crops up, just either right click on it and say "open in new tab" or if the thing that has croped up is a different term you wish to search for, just right click and select search with Bing (or whatever search engine you use.) This will search for that phrase in a new tab in the backround while your browsing in the current tab.

example: If I search for "vickers Vanguard" one of the results has text below it which mentions Vickers-Armstrong. I haven't finished looking at my results for Vickers Vangurad, but I want to do another search for Vickers-Armstrong. I just highlight the words in the text "vickers-Armstrong" and right click and choose "search with bing." A new tab will have opened in the background with the serach results for "vickers-Armstrong" all ready for when I have finished looking through the results I have for "Vickers Vangyuard"
