basically its using dynamic load to slow your aircraft to place you in a good firing solution -- Funny it was the F86 drivers in Korea
that really brought it to the fore. I can do it in the sim (just) I cant imagine popping airbrakes in a dog fight where supposedly speed
is life. One thing I do notice lack in Jans model (AND THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM) - I have been told the slats would "bang" in tight high G turns
at altiutde as the outer slat would unload and the inner load - (by the way that came from Bob Hoovers lecture at the Theatre in the Woods at Oshkosh.
As Airboatr said the man is incredible still going strong at 86

Thanks for the link, Leif. I tended to glaze over a bit after the first thousand words But I get the general idea. I understand why you didn't answer it yourself! I shouldn't need the manouevre with my pet AI Mig as I've set him on an hourly mission to take off from one airfield, do a TNG at another (sort of ground attack) and fly back. You'd think it would be easy to follow him, wouldn't you? But those two screenshots are the outcome of about four hours of searching, chasing, overshooting and rebooting Lots more practice yet!

Speaking of Bob Hoover, I found this 8 min clip of him doing a demo in a Phillipines F86 in 1961 and, as you would expect, performing miracles at stall speeds with the air brakes and everything else hanging out. I expect you've seen it before, but I'm only just getting deep into the whole Sabre/Korean war era thanks to this amazing model.

No I hadnt seen it before - He is a marvel -- I witnessed the Shrike Commander performce at Alton Illnois Air races back in 69 - and Duane Cole
do miracles with a Taylorcraft BC12D - Your right thats probably one of the most riveting examples of low speed control.

Im just glad Jan Visser and his merry band gave us this jewel - Cant wait for the Dog.

The sectionf8 support forum is up and running now http://sectionf8.com/f8forum/ and I asked about the 'easter egg' that sets the AP/radar to track AI aircraft. In case anybody's interested, here's the drill:

Turn the R/T switch on (IFF panel)
Turn the AutoPilot main switch to OFF, then click again to the left of the AP switch as though to turn it anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise).
When the radar detects AI within 25 miles the main radar light will flash.
Now click the AP switch fully clockwise(on its right) and a new position appears - R/T.
The AP will now track the AI and you only have to control the speed.
Hover the mouse pointer over the radar light for AI info.


As I can only see that Mig within 1.5 nm I need those speed brakes to avoid overshooting!

He wriggles like mad to get out of my sights. So far he's succeeded!

You could change the assignment of the Hat Switch down (look to the rear) to include the "/" key...This would mean that a quick glance to your six would toggle the Air Brakes, and releasing the Hat would return your view to front in the usual way.

I have speedbrakes/spoilers assigned to a button on the base of my joystick. One tap to toggle on and another tap to toggle off but I can see why you'd like to assign it to the hat, Chris - it's more like the real thing. I think I'll keep my hat free for seeing with

On the subject of the speedbrakes, page 7 of the reference guide (not the manual) refers to a setting on the SB switch called NEUTRAL (HOLD) which allows you to open and close the speedbrakes incrementally. I can't seem to find this as the switch just toggles IN or OUT. Maybe it's an FSX feature. Anybody else found it?

Ian, that's the feature I'm speaking of. The "/" key just deploys or retracts the speedbrakes. On the real airplane (and on the sim airplane) there is a rocker switch on top of the throttle with 3 positions - Open, Hold, and Close. This switch allows for you to place the speedbrakes at partial positions and is very important for formation work and dives (where you only partially open the speedbrakes to keep yourself below VNE until pull-out). I want to know like Ian if there's a way to assign this to a 3-position switch or a HAT switch to replicate the control (since I don't have a throttle that looks or works like a Sabre's.
