Anyway I can get rid of the HIDEOUS new icons for folder etc and go back to the nice ones from earlier versions

I'm still hating W7 with a passion BTW

The more I use it the more I want to go back to XP but it seems most of the stuff on here will not work properly on XP

And I've not got a 64 bit version of XP only several versions of 32 bit XP.

I find W7 depressing, it keeps doing things I don't want, like opening up new tabs instead of new windows on IE...I must look into that

Also the open programmes are collapse into a single programme icon on the task bar instead of spread out across the bar until it's full, something I find incredibly annoying as I keep having to go into the icon to select instead of just clicking the ones I want....Something else I've been looking to change.

I've yet to find something about W7 that I like

You will get used to it eventually! I like it better than XP because its a lot more stable & I find I do not have to Defrag anymore.
One really has to think back to '98 or even Millenium & how one transferred files then, & one can also have more than one window open to transfer things across from one to t'other.
Light up time is also a lot quicker. (I have 32 bit version, but set up for RAID, so that takes a little longer to start up, but not much).

Having more than one window open is not a problem..that is as always...not sure what your meaning there

Thing is I won't get used to it because I don't like the way it does things...I want to do it the way it was.

I'm still investigating my ultimate aim and that is to go back to XP. Having to do more than one thing when it was just one in not on

I still get this admin block even thougn I'm signed in as admin and although it can be got arround it should not happen

The new icons are truly horrible

But it's too clever for it's own good

Not sure what you mean as I didn't think the icons had changed that much other that they are softer looking

Not sure I understand this one, as 32bit XP will run fine on your new system (other than its end of life and heading very quickly towards out of support)

Not really a Win 7 issue Garry, every browser on the market uses tabbed browsing. If you want to switch it off, go to "internet options, on the General tab (the first one) look down to the section headed "Tabs" click on settings and uncheck "Enable Tabbed browsing"

I dont know if you can change this. It takes a bit of getting used to, but the idea is you hover the mouse over the program group and you get a preview of whats on the screen without having to switch to it

To be fair i think its because you coming from so far back Garry and this has been one massive change, rather than lots of smaller ones

It probably should happen Garry, too many folk think the know whats best and read things on the internet and start changing system files that either break their computers or permit Viruses to run rampant. As i've said in two previous post you can either switch off UAC or enable XP mode on specific exe files. IF FS is installed on a separate drive you don't get prompted for anything when moving files, you only get the admin prompt when its installed in the default location. Remember FS9 is 12 years old, there aren't many Operating systems that will still support 12 year old software

But my question here was how to get rid of the horrid icons and stop it doing things like putting all open windows in one task bar Icon and opening things up in new tabs on IE and open up new windows instead of news pages in the same window

It was all new stuff this time round I know what you said before but I wasn't asking that again.

Only mentioned it in the general reply to it being suggested I will get used to it...which I doubt it as it's going to get booted if at all possible.

The folder icons are vertical and show pages when there are things in them..I don't know if they are like that in XP as I used classic mode as I don't like the XP display

The 64 reference was that when I asked about going back to XP I was told the parts will not have full performance in a 32 bit OS

I don't want to get rid of tab browsing..iI know it can be turned off... I want to open new tabs when I want but clicking on the IE icon opens up a tab but I want in the same window so I can use the back and forward in that one window....or preferably in a new window.

This is the problem...it tries to guess what I want and it gets it wrong all the time.

Naffest of all it the Shut down button that doesn't bring up a selection widow giving a second chance and is placed right beside the search window.

If your getting prompted for admin permissions, its not. Something hasn't been done properly

Same as XP mate (and Windows 2000 and possibly Win98) The default view might be the "vertical list" known as "details". In the top right hand corner of the explorer window, working from right to left, there is the help Icon, preview pain Icon and finally a "change your view" icon. Click on the change your view icon cycles through the different views. Clicking on the arrow to the right of it presents a list of the different views and you can select the one you want, rather than cycling through them. I suspect part of the problem may be that youve been using clasic mode in XP, which makes it look and feel like Win 95

You should be able to go back to XP32 without issue, but you would only be able to address up to 4GB or RAM

Ah! This one is really easy, simply right click on the IE icon and select "internet explorer." If you use right click and then select it, it opens a new window, clciking on the icon opens a new tab

Its not guessing Garry, its doing what its been told to do. Its just a case of taking the time to work through things one at a time and solve them one at a time. You'll get lots of help here

You've been using what sounds like basic classic mode in XP which was designed to look very similar to Windows 95 /98, so your probably coming from a long way back without realising it

As I've mentioned before, you definately dont have an Admin account or UAC switched off. As mentioned before, you shouldn't be using the administrator account, thats not what its there for. Try creating a new account called "Garry" or something and slecet the option for Administrator

Easy one to change Garry, right click on the "Shutdown Button", select properties and then you can change the button from shutdown to something else.

UAC was probably turned off when the guy installed it before I received the machine as it was something I mentioned to him...about permissions that is

When it was suggested before to turn that off I found it was already off and in fact AVG flags that as a problem...security issue

It's not 'only doing what its asked' as I'm not asking it to find things before I've finished typing the search, I'm not asking it to open tabs, I'm not asking it to group things in a single item, I'm not asking it to stop me adding things.

Some things like automatically maximising windows and the lack of the recent documents in the start have been fixed and I'm looking to change quite a bit more...

The RAM issues is what I'm told...I won't be able to use the full 8GB...but would I with XP-64??

OK I can't use that all with FS but should be able to work is FS and other programmes running with more RAM

I'll need the permissions thing looked at as something is not right

I am logged on as Gary (miss pelt) and that is supposed to do it

No programmes I've loaded have gone into the default programme folder..reader was already there and this is an update that is locking out

Not sure what you mean about icons and lists...this is just the icons and there are alternates, but not the nice clear ones that used to be.

When they developed Windows they said how much effort they went into to make a good clear display and produce what was considered to be the optimum

Then they go and change it for XP...well It was good before that that has not changed and nearly everyone I know of with XP uses it on classic mode...that is people I've actually seen their displays.

You say that 'classic mode' makes XP look and feel like 98...EXACTLY and that's what I want
