No.. DEFINATELY no matches or naked flames  Anyone who's seen the Avion video 'Independent Airlines' and wonders why EK (I think it's EK) is taxiing with the crew door open can understand why!!

I've seen pics of South American Connie's flying with the overwings removed to try and vent it on the empty return to base

As I read in a book just last night a Vanguard full of frightened animals leaves quite a mess

The bells, the bells.

Nice shots Dave, must admit I'd forgotten what that panel looked like, never sat on that side much. good one of the manual pressure valve.
Didn't understand the "where did the oil come from", but I'll lay odds it's grease from the tiller wheel, it had a bloody great chain connecting the wheel to the control valve, always made a hell of a mess.

G-APES and ET were the only a/c used if we carried grooms in the rear, they had 2 cabin compressors, but still had the limit imposed.
Taxing with the door open was necessary if we had chickens or cattle onboard, otherwise there wasn't enough airflow on the ground and could cause suffocation.

The stink was overpowering!.

Ya-hooo! :) Cheers Robbie  I think it's great the way tiny bits of info keep dropping in to complete the picture ;-)

If you download those shots I uploaded for Fraser (they're pretty much like the ones above but with one of the AC panel) you'll see oil staining on the AC panel and that's what I was refering to ;-)
