Actually Tom Dooley, The Sloop John B and Red River were favorites of my Dad...Used to sing em tooling around the Cotswolds in the Bristol Siddely with the top down - usually on the way to somewhere pleasent like the Air ballon, The Highwayman or the Royal Oak in Painswick - pub gardens, sneaky shandys and crisps


Ahhh wonderful memories

Oooh I remember Armstrong-Siddeleys, or open top touring in the dickie seat of a Lanchester, Vimto cordials in the back yard of a pub on a summers evening in Hampshire. Golden sun setting behind a stand of horse chestnuts and a chill starting to get into the air, cramming into the passenger footwell of the Lanchester to get some warmth, going home to a log fire in the hearth and listening to the Home Service before sleep closed its indigo shroud around a happy young lad

I still love the Cotswolds and am looking forward to taking a certain young gentlemen there when he's old enough...there was a nice little pub in Avebury that still sported a garden and good cider on the wood eight years
ago when I was working for Trans Aer in Dublin....theres another of lifes pleasures and delights - quart bottles of Cider kept in a bucket of water at the side of a wheat field ready for the last pass of the bailer and sled....
oh yes music from Radio Luxemberg or Hilversum - anyone remember Sam Costa.???

Did you forget The Mill at Withington? Haven't been there in a long time but that's where my dad would pour some of his pint into a glass for me.

I prefer the Farmer's Arms in Painswick, a tiny pub but with a large garden. I can still be found there on Sunday evening with the lads when I'm in Cheltenham.

The first time we went there about 30 years ago and sat in the saloon bar my mate Steve got some dirty looks from the regulars and the comment "That's Fred's chair". "Sorry" says Steve getting up "I didn't know someone was sitting here". "Fred died in that chair three years ago" says the other guy "no one sits in Fred's chair". :tuttut: A tradition that hasn't survived.

Damn - what did I start Yep do remember the Farmers - seems my farther had penchant for "road houses" hence the Air Ballon - which I understand burnt down about 7 years ago but has been since rebuilt - the Highwayman at Cranham - and a rather nice pub at the top of Birdlip Hill that I cannot for the life of me remember the name but the garden looked out over the Vale of Gloucester. - Also a another which name slips my mind on the road into Nailsworth --remember that mainly for the fact that
it had the most incredible roses in the garden -- and if anyone asks here "what the hell does all this have to do with Classic British Flight -- well lets see - on those little evening sojurns you had - GAC with its Javelins, Staverton with all the wonderful Smiths stuff, Nymphsfield with a plethora of gliders, RAF traffic everywhere - KC97s stoooging around at night pretending to be UFOs they had so many lights.....ahhh heady times
