Re: New Chip off the old block
Good info chaps, thanks very much. Can someone at JF advise me where the inspiration for the flying helmets came from - Ski Sunday perhaps ? The Super Bowl ?

No real issues with mine in P3Dv2 (using migration tool for install, rather than the JF direct installer to P3Dv2).Chris Sykes wrote:Well P3D my Chippie doesn't want to work, any one else having issues?
Though there are some weird things such as the landing light:

but that can simply be switched off...

Only other weird thing is the 1/4 views:

I thought those grass-covered taxiways were supposed to have been sorted?

That's very disappointing!
However, as far as the Chippie and P3D goes, not much to bemoan from here...

This was always my view:

So it seems okay so far (those two small hiccups excepted).

Re: New Chip off the old block
Dave, you can't necessarily blame the beta testers for errors. During the very long and extensive testing of Air Hauler I found a real pain in the neck bug, but because I was the only one who had it, nothing was done - even though it remained for months before release through every beta and RC version, through to retail and on past the SPs. Guess what? Yup - loads of people got that issue and still have to suffer it. I think even the dev found himself suffering from it at some stage. Poetic justice! That's why I left the team for Air Hauler 2!
Whats the point of having beta testers if someone finds a real clanger and you just ignore it...

Re: New Chip off the old block
You're right on that point. Beta testers can scream until they're blue in the face but if the developer doesn't want it changed.. it stays put. Beta testers are much maligned and things are not always their fault.. but sometimes they are
Talking of lights.. I like your 'Gotham City' flood
Here's a couple to round off the day with. Live weather, correct time/day/month/year..
Departing Wolverhampton for a quick shuftie over Shifnal way before heading back to ole' Otherton. Incidentally.. the moon is a darned sight brighter than FS depicts it tonight. The white light to the right side of me in the first shot isn't my new nav white falling off.. it's some other joy-rider heading North. The second shot.. transfixed with fear and unable to move at Otherton

I DO hope JF provide a wing map for the PK so that the painters can get cracking asap. I like the paints I had with Rick's model and I want them for this one NOW!

Re: New Chip off the old block
Not sure what to think of it....early days for sure. Found about 10 items so far, but major ones seem to be that wind noise, seems to have an almost STOL flight characteristics on take off, brakes seem a little fierce and can't fly it with the canopy open.
Thanks,
Martin

Re: New Chip off the old block
It works fine for me in P3d2, installed directly. Landing light is ok too.
You can open the canopy in flight, but not using shift-E, it's in the manual
I thought the wind noise was Accu-feel, but it appears not. I'll have to have another dig
The thing with the navlights is it must have been noticed, and it's such a simple thing to get right. Took less than 5 mins to find the problem and correct it.
I'm sure there will be a mod to correct the power and other FD issues shortly, either official, or 3rd party.
Overall, I like it. Worth a tenner (or £7-50 with JF points

Re: New Chip off the old block
Would anybody care to comment on the quality of the wing textures in the context of the replies posted on the first two pages of this topic ?
For someone whose only experience of a Chipmunk is Rick's superb model, I'm sort of tempted to buy this JF model at the introductory price, but am put off by the relative lack of repaints for earlier JF releases. As an example, I did a quick survey at allnodes and found that one of the most popular models being repainted was the DC-8, along with the R22. Even the Lightning only attracted about four or five repaints, with even less for the Spitfire pack ...
If this model does attract the amount of repaints suggested above, I hope someone includes G-APSB as pictured by Peter on page one of this topic. Well, perhaps without the burnt tail ...
Thanks in advance for any input,
Ro

Re: New Chip off the old block
Looks like they've toned down then ribbing effect on the wing. It's still there (as it should be) but it seems much closer to the real thing now.
Hopefully there will be plenty of paints, once the missing wing maps in the paintkit are sorted out.

Re: New Chip off the old block
Just got it, using 106 loyalty points which I didn't know I had ( I'd forgotten I even had an account with them - gawd I'm getting old ). Anyway, it looks very good. As Dave G says, the wing ribbing is much better and looks pretty much like the real thing, so that's a relief. This is going to be a great favourite with UK simmers, particularly us ex-ATC cadets for whom the Chipmunk is just about the only military aircraft we ever took the controls of. Well done JF - a good model at a great price.
