Re: My first day with P3D
A question about installing 1.4. Can it be installed over 1.3 or does 1.3 have to be uninstalled first ? I was just thinking about any ported-over FSX aircraft already in 1.3's Sim Objects folder, and whether they could stay there while 1.4 was installed on top.

Hi Paul. This news post from P3D suggests that it is a fresh install. Also it says : the afternoon of the 20th - in case you've set your alarm

I'm still busy setting up my new laptop. FSX is installed now and I'm now installing the FTX scenery. So I'll leave it a few days before installing P3D. I'll let you try it first. It's what I do best

Thanks Skippy, tried that but it seems that P3d thinks the brakes are connected to the X axis which is aileron.

Yep, I know 1.4 is a full install, not a patch. But what I'm asking is - can 1.4 be installed on top of 1.3, so that any add-on aircraft that I've installed to 1.3 are still there when the 1.4 Sim Objects folder merges with that of 1.3.
Re: My first day with P3D
Hi Paul, strictly speaking no, its a fresh install. Just looking at the release notes (its available now) there aren't any huge changes. You could always backup your simobjects / Gauges / effects folders and copy them back in after installing 1.4

Hi Paul. This is the relevant section from the installation instructions. The 1.4 instruction pdf is the same for 1.3. This is the section about upgrading and I've just copied the essential paragraphs that I think answer your question. Basically they say installing over the top should work as designed but uninstalling first will help guarantee success. (Note - not guarantee success, just help to guarantee it
)
I might ask another forum member to translate into American for me.
I'll download later in the week when the servers have cooled down and I've got more time!

I'm in the middle of a protracted email exchange with P3D licensing as they say I will need a new license to load 1.4 on to new hardware. However, I think it's partly me using the English language to explain my situation and partly they're not reading what I have wrotePrepar3d wrote:Upgrading the Prepar3D® Client
NOTE: This section only applies to those installing a newer version of Prepar3D® on a computer that has
a previous version of Prepar3D® already installed. For instance, if you have Prepar3D® 1.2 installed on a
computer and you have just downloaded and are attempting to install Prepar3D® 1.3 on the same
computer, you should follow this section. If this is the first time you are installing Prepar3D, please skip
this section and go to the section titled Installing the Prepar3D® Client.
Installing a newer version of the Prepar3D® client over an older version should work as designed, but
following these steps will help guarantee success.
Windows Vista / Windows 7
1. You must first uninstall your original Prepar3D® installation. You will want to back up any
additional content (models, scenery, configurations) before continuing with the uninstall. To
begin the uninstall, go to your Start Menu, Control Panel, and open Programs and Features.
Select Prepar3D from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button on the menu bar.
Follow the on screen prompts to uninstall Prepar3D®. etc. etc. etc.

Re: My first day with P3D
Ben, thanks for that. I've yet to transfer any FSX aircraft to 1.3, so its not an issue this time round - but by the time 1.5 come along, the relevant 1.4 folders will be bulging. I'll do as you suggest.
Ian, thanks for that. Can you explain what the problem is exactly, regarding the new hardware ? Are they saying that you need a separate license for each computer you have ?
I too will wait till the rush is over before downloading v1.4.

Re: My first day with P3D
Hi Paul,
Its likely that 1.4 will be the last 1.* version, so unlikely to see a 1.5. Basically, from my reading of the license, its tied to a machine. New machine, new license. So the best way is to say your rebuilding rather than buying a new one.
