Get it on.. blimey, I still have the single here (though no record player to play it on!)

Yeh.. I was sorta into T-Rex before the 'glam' malarkey when they were Tyrannosaurus Rex.. just Marc Bolan and Steve Took (he was an odd one wasn't he)

Tried a few times to see him live but missed out

I didn't realise my musical taste was quite so diverse.. T-Rex on one end and Focus on the other

Genres have never kept me tied up.. if I like a song, I buy it regardless of what 'genre' its from

Ah, the Tyrannosaurus Rex of "Phrophets, Seers and Sages" and "My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows." Wonder who came up with that for an album tittle? Yes, I liked that era also. The first song I ever heard by them was "Deborah", which I think was an updated "Deboraarobed" Such a simpe song but one of those that you can't get out of your head. My daughter hated it and would protest every time I played it. She had usually trusted my choice in music but that had broken the trust. Trust was restored after she heard me play "Guided By Voices" (an American Indie band, strongly influenced by British post punk). She introduced that band to her friends and suddenly her dad was very hip again, despite him also listening to Elgar.

Looks like I'll have to defend punk.
It may not have been sweet or pretty (Pretty Vacant maybe) but it shook up the stale pop music industry of the day and lead directly to new wave. At least it meant the end of many MOR groups like The Rubettes. And for that we should be grateful.

I totally agree with you there, Jon. I stepped aside from what would be called pop music at about age 14 anyway, preferring things like Van Der Graaf Generator, EL&P, Yes and such like. But I do remember how bad the British popular music scene got, both homegrown and imported - around 1976, how many more Motown-derivative male vocal quartets could there be ? There were some bands that briefly sparked my interest, such as Queen, though I must say if I never heard another of their songs ever again, it wouldn't bother me. Supertramp were and still are a favourite
Then came punk which, as you rightly say, shook the music industry, not to mention the Joe Public and the media. After the shock wore off ( and the dross that accompanied it- bye bye Bill Grundy's career ) we were left with something we otherwise would never have had. Look at all the punk and post-punk bands that came into being; Sham 69, The Clash, The Strangers, The Damned, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees etc etc. Coupled with the coming of electronics that meant somebody could record a song in their back bedroom, and so the rise of the small independent labels, it was the best thing that could have happened.

Yes mate.. I have to agree

Supertramp remind me of being at sea and away from the ex-wife.. among other things

I bought 'Breakfast in America' in Fiji (of all places) and what a fine run ashore that was. No picking up a phone and dialling home.. one had to go to the local Cable and Wireless office and book the call. You'd then sit and wait for your name to be called out followed by a booth number.. Mr Booker, call to England.. booth 1 please

I also amazed my mom.. making the very call I mention. She couldn't believe I was phoning from tomorrow.. or so it seemed to her

Sadly, Fiji brings back another memory.. Lord Mountbatten had just been killed by the IRA

Never mind.. I'll block that one out

Bloody well right.
I recently converted my Best of Supertramp album from the vinyl LP to MP3. A slow process.

Nigel,
I didn't mean to give the impression that I thought Adele was on a par with Bach & Beethoven.
Rather that these were amongst the oldest and newest compositions that I listen to regularly. On the CD shelf Adele is next to Altered Images and Bach next to Bachman, Turner Overdrive.
Paul,
Wilko Johnson playing the guitar like it was a lethal weapon on Roxette.
Two Tone and The Specials.
