For such a basic colour, red can be a right pain in the butt can't it  DG got away with it just fine on his 'hairy' Hunter but it sure doesn't always work that way. I remember we planned an RAE Shack (for the Shack Project model) and it got binned early on due to how the blue looked (blue.. another dodgy colour!). To get it to look as it should (not impossible) would have meant a separate model with the dynamic shine backed off otherwise the effect was a candyapple blue very similar to how the red shows on the Canberra. Shame as the raspberry ripple Shack looked stonkin'

I'm sure you'll get it in the end Steve

I have to agree, Dave, this red is turning out to be a thorny old issue. Based off Ian's links and the various photos, I am going to figure out the best red I can come up with (something in between the pink and flatter red we've seen.
Any discrepancies can then be explained off as 'weathering'

Too bad you binned the Shackleton... was it really that bad you had to do that? Got any screens of how it looked?

Hi Steve,

The 'Shack Project' was.. lets say, arduous for just about all concerned :poke: Project Leader in SA.. model maker in NZ, painter in UK, FD in the UK, panel from the UK plus the plethora of folk involved in bringing all the various parts together.. me being one of them  I looked this afternoon on one of my old PC's to see if I had the Rae Shack paint but couldn't find it unfortunately. Main problem was the dynamic shine off the model. It worked fine for the SA and RAF paints but was just too much for the RAE paint. Various options were looked at but by this time, in order to maintain some sort of momentum.. it was decided that the RAE was best left undone. The effect off the blue was exactly the same as that shown by the red on your Canberra paint despite the best efforts of the painter to eradicate it and pressure to release saw it's early and untimely demise

Will see if I can find a colour (or B&W) shot of how she looked

Well, see what you think now...here's pillar box red from the BS381 standard swatches:

Dave, the Shack project sounds involved indeed and truly international. Looking forward to seeing some screens if you can dig them up.

That looks fine to me. Definitely an improvement over the previous one.

Looks much better - I wasn't sure from the subtle difference between the swatches if it was going to make any difference. Amazing how a slight tweak does it.

Phew! I'm glad it looks better. I wasn't sure if it had gone too flat a red now but that's probably healthy paranoia. Cheers to everyone for their input. I'll get this uploaded to the pond ASAP.
