Ohhh, I've only just seen this thread, I'll have to download it when I get the chance. Hows the flight model, I take it it isn't true vertical into traditional flight?

Bill (aka Lionheart) has posted some great tweaks to the flight model. He lists his tweaks as...

A. Model now flies at a top speed of just over 300 knots as per data on the aircraft, (287 Knots).
B. Aircraft now takes off slower
C. Flaps transitioning is now longer for smoother flight transitions
D. Spoiler acts to slow you down for a better descent set-up on VTOL landings
E. Landings now feature a faster descent then previously featured
F. Rudder axis helo controls are more prominent
G. Vibration at high speeds has been illiminated
H. Ground handling/steering improved for better taxi capabilities

You can find the download at the bottom of this page.

Bill,

Thanks for the tip. I tried the tweak (did not try the original) and found it fairly easy to fly and I am not one that is skilled with helicopters.

One thing I did notice is that the speeds maybe a bit optimistic. The [reference speed] section lists the cruise speed as 287kts and the blighter will do that!

One of my sources, the Observers Book of Aircraft from 1958 (OK, go ahead and laugh) lists the estimated speed as 184mph at 3,000 feet. And that is for the version with the more powerful N.EL.7 engines which I think were for the proposed military version.

My Putnam Fairey tome gives a cruise speed of 185mph for the prototype and 200mph for production models (both civil and military).

Best wishes

I suspect I'm maybe the only person on here who's actually seen (and heard......) the Rotodyne fly.

In the '50s we lived at RAF Benson and Fairey did some of the later flight testing of the beast from there, primarily because the noise of the tip jets was so loud that the residents around White Waltham complained mightily! Presumably RAF families were considered audibly expendable..... :k:

I can assure you that the noise with the tip jets running was quite UN-believable!

It would start up the Elands nicely, managing to sound much like a Viscount or HS748 with a Dart-like whine. Then they'd open the air valves to the tip jets and it would hiss like the world's biggest snake for a short while before they lit off the burners in the tip jets. Then it got REALLY loud, with a huge roar that just went on and on, completely drowning out the ELands. Quite why they ran it on the ground for so long I have no idea, I was about 13-14 at the time I think and no way would they let me onto the airfield to ask questions!

After 10-15 minutes of this torture they'd open the throttles (!) and the darn thing would lift off and fly away toward the south. The tip jets could be heard for miles, long after the 'Dyne was out of sight over the hills to the South, so I have no idea when they shut them down.

On it's return it would usually come in from the East and it would already have the jets running in 'full noise' mode. Luckily the shutdown was much shorter in duration than the take-off routine. As I recall they did this for about 3 weeks or so, flying at weekends as well as in the week.

I was a bad asthma sufferer at the time and spent a lot of time away from school, but living on an airfield like Benson it was no hardship! As it was a ferry station at the time it was an aviation enthusiasts mecca.

Switching to FS04 Rotodynes, I've tried to import some of Rob Barendregt's VTOL stuff into Ito San's 'Dyne but with pretty poor results. The odd mixture of fixed wing and helicopter .cfg file stuff rather mitigates that working. I hope Rob does a special file for it.
