I'm a bit late on this one. I can't help out regarding the stolen wheels - that's a job for Bergerac, but as for the trees, this how I do trees too. You have basically a "cross" formed of 2 2D squares and then you use a bitmap with alpha channel to restrict that part of the polygon that is drawn to only those parts that do not have something other than pure white in the alpha layer.
If you have DXTBmp by Martin Wright, you can check if the alpha layer is correctly saved, or try re-saving to another format (if all else fails, 32bit). Usually to create the alpha channel, you have to make the outline black and then ask DXTbmp to make the alpha layer on that basis. You can then vary the shade of grey (ho ho) used in the alpha channel to achieve varying levels of transparency through to completely inivisible (unpainted). Normally for scenery objects, FS automatically handles the alpha layer in this way.
