I used to work for AB. Really brought home the limitations of the 510ED. Struggled to get back from Malaga when you could get a true 500 back from Athens.

No mate.. for those who missed the post before, yours snicked in while I was typing. The legend I have on my other set of keys is 'Jet Noise.. The Sound of Freedom'. That tab still has my ZX9 key on it so I guess I'll have to transfer it to the Triumph. I don't think Jet Noise applies there though.. unless of course you're talking V1 flying bomb

Ah jet noise. It was 1951 or 2, I was five or six and we'd just moved to a peaceful lane in Kent. My brother and I were playing quietly outside with nothing but birdsong to disturb the summer afternoon. I had no knowledge of aircraft, let alone jets. With no warning a Meteor suddenly appeared above us at treetop height blotting out the sun and enveloping us in the loudest blast of unbelievable noise that we could ever have imagined. And it was over in seconds leaving two little boys screaming and crying in abject terror and Dad and Mum running out to scoop us up and carry us indoors to try and calm us down. We had absolutely no concept of what had happened!

So long ago and yet I can see it and hear it quite clearly as though it was yesterday. I still find it terrifying. It's amazing what the military could get away with then. Sonic booms were quite regular occurrences back in them days too. Who'd have thought then that I'd choose a career that would involve sitting and working between two pairs of Conways at full bore? Perhaps there's something Freudian in it!

Ian :)

I had a similar first experience of jets in the early '60s.

Our were a couple of lightning ......fearsome. :-O

Didn't see another jet, bar high overflights, until BUA were trialling the One-Eleven :tunes:

When the temps got warm (and we're talking 1-11's here not hot!) then de-min water injection came into play. But beware a trap for the unwary!! Looking at Runway XX at airport XYZ at say 24 degrees you might with water, get a 250kg increase in Regulated Take-Off Weight over the dry figure. BUT, to achieve this, you had to put 350 litres/kg of water on, so a net loss in performance of 100kg!
he-he; I remember having a similar converation with a Fokker 27 driver over filling (or not) the de-min water tank for the trusty Darts!!
