I 've just spoke to a mate who I mentioned this to last week.
He has FireFox but doesn't use it
So he loaded it up and after a while his machine started to slow down big time, no doubt as it tried to monitor more previously open pages.....his CPU was running at 80-100 per cent
He did use to use it and that didn't happen in the past, or as with me, nothing was noticed previously, so it looks like it might indeed be a problem with the latest version.
Based on this I uninstalled it and with my FS.9 locked at 20FPS I had a constant 19.9 with no pauses or stutters.
It may not be the whole story......I doubt that it is, but it's a good step forward.
Still don't no why the Standby won't work due to a driver needing an update on a drive that the machine can't even see
But I think I'll have a day off tomorrow....repair the wall and let the swelling on my head go down and have another little worry sometime next week
Thank for the replies

Hello Mate..
Well, if that's the case.. even though I rarely use FF now, I'll not bother updating to the latest version
The Standby issue..
Something that needs to go to sleep (standby) can't for some reason and this is usually (in my experience anyway) caused by a driver.. either a duff driver or one not installed. Windows knows what components are there and if it can't tell a particular component to go to standby or doesn't know how to, either the standby option in the 'shutdown' box is greyed or the pc will play up when you force the issue

HI Dave
It reports that a driver is missing of corrupt and suggest updating it
It reports ther is a problem with the DVD Rom which doesn't work and hasn't for a while
Yet when I try go to the DVD Rom to update it tells me the device is not found......and that's as far as it goes

Hello Mate
I don't want to pour scorn on the situation but the last time I had an error like that (it was with a CDROM not a DVDRom).. the problem persisted until I binned the CDROM

I suppose the good news, should there be any, is that DVDR's of whatever variety you fancy are cheap as chips these days though none of us like to spend money we don't have on something we don't want to buy.. especially when guarantee's of success are not guaranteed

well Dave....It's frustrating as I don't need it
Yes..it's probably knackered, but I have the DVDRW and an external CD.
I think when My nephew comes round again I'll get him to disconnect it and see if that helps.
It's not worked since the power supply blew......
In the meantime you can por lots of scorn onto it

Gary, if you go to Administrative Tools and then Computer Management, then select Storage and next select Disk Management, what shows up?
Select the Action menu at the top and try to Rescan Disks just to make sure. If your DVD Rom does not show up there, it probably is dead and that may have happened when the power supply blew.
The only reason I posted this is when I first connected a USB flash drive to my computer, it would not recognize it. Going to Computer Management and doing the Rescan Disks fixed the problem (don't ask how or why) and I have had no problems since.

Gary, on WinXP, it might be on your start menu (right hand panel) when you first pull it up before clicking on all programs. Otherwise go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance and select the Icon for Administrative Tools. I can't remember if I added it to my start menu of not which is why I gave you an alternative.
PS - Just checked and I did add Administrative Tools to my start menu.
http://byronmiller.typepad.com/byronmil ... syste.html tells you how to do this - apparently it is one of those tools Microft likes to hide from the user.
