Some of our club member own Urals - see HERE and HERE.

My bike is now in bits. Here's what sheds were made for!:

Image

although when you get a bit closer, it doesn't look so squeaky clean:

Image

Image

Would you believe I've only had it less than 4 months and done less than 200 miles on it?

Image

The brown stuff is where I slopped on the anti-rust treatment:

Image

They said they had serviced it, but just look at the engine top:

Image

The proof of their bull-talking is in the air filter:

Image

For anyone reading this and not familiar with bikes - here's a comparison with the replacement filter:

Image

and here's the battery - looks like it's never been topped up:

Image

The oil had been renewed, along with the filter. I think that's all they bothered with! That was once they had got the sump plug off. It took me loads of levering away the aftermarket pipes:

Image

Here's a better view (though a bit out of focus):

Image

So yes, the oil does pee out all over the downpipes when you finally manage to pull the plug!

I was, however, very impressed with the state of the plugs. They have obviously been in for many years, but the fuel mixture would seem to be set correctly:

Here's my home-made top box rack:

Pretty damned good, eh? (note the reg ;) )

So yes, I have my work cut out! Tomorrow it's the fork oil and new EBC pads on, then back together and hopefully feeling a lot better. Then in summer, strip it all down again for a sanding down and respray of the frame and swingarm. Just need the appropriate weather for outside spraying. :)

Oh , and regarding our 'yesterdays' as referred to in the thread title - I do have some nice pics lined up, but I need to scan them first *-)

It's all down to the Molotov - Von Ribbentrop pact of 1939. Apart from a non aggression agreement, and half of Poland, the Soviet Union also got the plans to BMW's 750cc boxer engined motorcycle. It's just that BMW have continued to develop their version whilst the Russian's haven't. They have also been made in other factories in the ex USSR and sold as Cossack, Dnieper and possibly other names.
It used to be said that after buying a new one you should dismantle it, blueprint it, and rebuild it properly to get a reliable if old fashioned motorbike. :) It could be that quality control has improved since the 70s.

I found some more Ural history: http://www.ural.cc/index.php?de_history

An oil/filter change is pretty much what passes for a 'service' these days. You might have found bit's of 'obvious' grease bunged here and there to simulate work having been done 8) I booked the Trumpet in for an MoT today.. next Tue at 10:30. You watch.. it'll pi$$ down

I looked for a few of my old shots a couple of days ago (those the ex-MrsB didn't bin) but they weren't where I was expecting them to be and this means only one thing.. they're where I didn't want them to be.. up in the loft :|

Finally got it all finished and back on the road today. With the decent air filter fitted, it's got a great sounding new rasp on acceleration.

I would have had it finished sooner, but I had one of those problems that let you know you're getting on a bit now - i.e. putting it all back together and finding I still have two bolts left over! :dunno:

Took me more than a day's hard thinking to realise where they had come from (fork stanchion stub-axle clamps). 8)

And, of course, just as I pulled my jacket and helmet on for the test ride, it started pouring down. And just after I got back and put the bike in the garage - you guessed it - it stopped!

Well, this Sunday it's the local club ride to the biker meet in Mablethorpe, so a good opportunity to give it a proper run, knowing I'll be in the right sort of company should anything go wrong. :agree:

Hi JOhn,
I can still see the floor of your shed - more work needed there, methinks  .
Interesting bunch of shots of your machine, thanks for sharing. That air filter "after service" was a disgrace! :|
Am I thick, or what? You're apparently in the UK, but are in the "Boston....." Club? Is it international like CBFS?

EDIT:
Ah, now I see, it's just a name, obviously those other pix are in the UK AND the website ends in .co.uk
I'll blame the cool Autumn weather...brain clog.

Well done on getting it all back together again JD.. AND finding where the 2 'extra' bolts had come from ;)

Took mine in for an MoT this morning and while it didn't actually rain, it HAD rained earlier and the roads were damp. The bike now has road spray all over it  He commented that my rear pads were getting a little thin but he knows how many miles I do on it so wasn't concerned (a whole 363miles last year)! I'm not sure how I managed to do so many to be honest  Like yours.. it could do with an air filter change (it's still on the original filter) and while I like to change the oil/filter annually.. I don't feel disposed to throw another fist full of cash at 5ltrs of oil and a filter after such low mileage so it'll have to make do. The coolant could do with flushing out and changing too and maybe a plug inspection (they're original too) so we'll see. At the MoT station, it had 5901miles on the clock.. not in any way excessive for an 07 plate machine ;)

I'm not quite sure what you mean, Mike, but I live on the Southern edge of Boston - the original town in the Midlands - you know, where the Pilgrim Fathers were chucked in jail! That about sums this place up!

You sound like me, Dave - every time you look at the bike, you start noticing all the things you want to spend the money you haven't got on.

Congrats on the MoT, anyway (I'm guessing it passed :hide: ) Image

I managed to get away with only buying 2 litre bottles of oil (so £14-odd instead of £28 for a 4 litre one) - I had a full 'top-up' one already and the bike needs exactly 3 litres for a standard oil & filter change. Though I took 3.5 litres out, weirdly the 3litres was enough :dunno:

That thought struck me in bed last night...perhaps there is a UK Boston. Why didn't you mention that you were near Skirbeck, we ALL know where that is?
Time to organise a marathon, and put yourselves on the map!

Even better would have been to refer to the Boston Stump!

Sadly.. another addition to the 'All our yesterdays' thread..

My dear, gentle 13yo Labrador, Poppy :'(

She'd been going off her food a little over the past 3 or 4 weeks.. never a good sign with a Labrador.. and we suspected it was due to general old age and arthritis. I heard a bump, bump, bump a couple of weeks ago and I found the poor old girl with her bum on the floor at the bottom of the stairs.. she'd been trying to get upstairs and had obviously lost her footing (slow as it was) and slipped 3 or 4 steps. I made an appointment with the vet with a view to getting her onto some sort of doggie pain killers and the vet commented almost immediately that inside her ears and gums looked a little pale which could be a sign of a tumour on her spleen. A blood test was arranged the next day and it confirmed her red blood cell count was low so she was booked in yesterday for an ultra-sound scan to confirm (or deny) this.
The wife and I pained over what to do. Poppy wasn't insured.. she'd barely cost us a penny throughout her life. The only major outlay was when she was a pup. She started passing money (almost a dog owners dream!!) and being sick. An xray showed a dark shadow in her gut so we had her operated on. The vet presented us with almost a fiver in change! This, by the way, cost us a tad over £420 to recover!
Anyhoo.. an operation to remove the tumour (should that be the problem) would be very costly but we were keen to do what we could for her. Weighing up the pro's and con's, we decided in the end that 'Pop' was at the upper end of a Labradors expected lifespan (10-13yrs for a healthy dog) so could we justify having the poor old girl hacked about? The more we thought about it, the more futile putting her through an op became so.. we made the decision to have the her put to sleep. Yesterday, the scan confirmed a tumour on Poppy's spleen so while she was still sedated (awake but sedated) I went down and said my teary farewells while the vet administered the double dose :(
The wife (on a course in Nottingham incidentally) says we're not having another. She may feel different when she comes back and I'm out at work and the house is empty. We've had Labradors for almost 24years and I can tell you.. not having a dog around is not very nice. The vets assistant said to me yesterday that a house is not a home without a dog. I'm sure many dog owners/lovers will agree :'(
